I'm sorry, but this is getting too confusing.
Are you saying that the parents of the students you teach know you used to be an engineer and are now treating you differently that you are a teacher?

I cannot imagine where you are encountering this "general disrespect." Which to me, means that society in general shares this opinion. MOST people I know have a great deal of respect for teachers. I think you are projecting some feelings you might have inside yourself.

>> I see it in nonprofits all the time -- someome from the corporate arena will decide they want to "do good' and move into the nonprofit world and expects everyone to be oh so grateful -- honestly? I'm more impressed by the volunteer who's been coming in every week to do mailings for me or the young go getter out of college who plunges into nonprofit work knowing the pay stinks but the rewards are huge than I am the corporate fugitive who glides in on a resume that has no bearing on the work we do and expects the nonprofit world to throw up their arms and shout "hurray we're saved" <<
Thanks - you just saved me the keystrokes. HUGE pet peeve of mine. HUUUGGGEEEEE.

If I encountered a teacher like that, I know I'd wonder.
Switching careers is hard. One does get challenged and put through one's paces. One just has to be prepared for it and have a thick skin.
