Why should I support someone else?

Let me start by saying that I"m new here so this may have already been discussed, but this has come up in my office several times and I wanted to get some other views of this.

I do payroll for a rather small company so I know most of the workers and their wives (most of the workers are men due to the nature of our business). There are two in particular who's wives SAH. These two are up to their eyeballs in debt. I have bill collectors constantly calling for them. That part is really their business, it is annoying but I enjoy being rude back to the bill collectors, lol.

The part that bothers me is that both wives have been in the office wanting copies of X amount of check stubs so that they can go and get public assistance (I know because they told me that is what it is for)! Why should my tax money go so that these women can SAH? I know that not all families that one parent stays at home are like this, but I know lots that are. Heck, growing up we were always broke because my mother refused to work, but we weren't on any public assistance.

So, why should I pay for a woman to SAH? Why can't she go and get a job to support her family just like anyone else?

Nope. I never said all. She seemed to have a hard time understanding why people who could afford the mall would choose a thrift shop. Trying to recycle used goods is just one reason a person might have for doing it.

As far as judgement, I didnt start this discussion by talking about *thrift store people*. If you are talking judgment, talk to hazeleyes.

You obviously know very little about it and are just making assumptions now.

Not always. In January 2000, I wrecked our old car, which we had been planning on replacing about 2002. We had been saving for a new car and were almost at our goal, but then as a result of the wreck, we got a 12,000 check from our insurance company because the old car was totalled. I was planning on paying cash for a new van, but then when we found out we could get 0.9% financing on the van, we did so and left the money in the bank to earn higher interest. We would have lost money paying for the van outright.

I buy a lot of Old Navy, it tends to fit me well. (No chest.. LOL) I've never had a problem with shrinking. Maybe it's the washing in super hot water that they do in order to kill all the evil disease causing germs.

How much electricity does a hybrid consume? If it is using a good bit then it really isn't that environmentally sound because electricity requires natural resources. I'm personally keeping an eye on the alternative fuel vehicles (biodiesel and E85). I'm a long ways from buying any of the above so I'm still in the questioning phase.

My dd is almost 16 and while she definitely has fashion sense, she is by no means obsessed and never has been. She is not much into name brands, except for a few select items (she loves designer handbags of all things, lol). In fact she refuses to shop at Abercrombie or American Eagle because *everyone shops there*. She likes it when I order her stuff online from obscure sites, and yes-she shops at thrift/secondhand stores.

I have seen underwear at Goodwill but they were packaged. Our Goodwill gets alot of donations from warehouses and such. I've bought many things there brand new. I found one of my favorite shirts at Goodwill with the tags still on it. It was originally $40 and I bought it for $3.50. Its held up for 3 fall/winter/spring seasons (assume overlap) and is still going.
