Why should I support someone else?

Let me start by saying that I"m new here so this may have already been discussed, but this has come up in my office several times and I wanted to get some other views of this.

I do payroll for a rather small company so I know most of the workers and their wives (most of the workers are men due to the nature of our business). There are two in particular who's wives SAH. These two are up to their eyeballs in debt. I have bill collectors constantly calling for them. That part is really their business, it is annoying but I enjoy being rude back to the bill collectors, lol.

The part that bothers me is that both wives have been in the office wanting copies of X amount of check stubs so that they can go and get public assistance (I know because they told me that is what it is for)! Why should my tax money go so that these women can SAH? I know that not all families that one parent stays at home are like this, but I know lots that are. Heck, growing up we were always broke because my mother refused to work, but we weren't on any public assistance.

So, why should I pay for a woman to SAH? Why can't she go and get a job to support her family just like anyone else?

No, you see, car shoppers only have two choices; 10+ yr old gas guzzlers, or brand new cars.

Sorry, you're wrong. If you get a new car, the old one still exists. Most people sell their old cars or trade them in. In that case, SOMEONE is driving it, even if it isn't you. So you basically just added the emissions of the new car to that of the old car. On top of the resources consumed to manufacture a new car.

I am not speaking of buying more, but being better things, more expensive that you can now afford.

I had a Gap sweatshirt from 1988. While it was still good, it was an 80's style shirt. I was very long and not something I would wear today as the styles are more form-fitting.

I don't think you should spend all your money but why leave millions to family while you ate mac & cheese everyday to save a buck. I don't get it. You live only one life so why not enjoy it and splurge every once in a while.

I know exactly what I am talking about. I worked for the company also that my mom worked at. They take clothes from the bins and make into rags and sell to industries and companies all over the nation. That is why I would not give to the bins anymore because I feel by giving to Big Brother, I know my things will go to good use.

Yes I was serious. You didn't specify to whom you were referring. Thanks for the list. So let me ask you. Do you think people shouldn't enjoy their money? That whatever is left over should be donated? My DH and I do donate and volunteer with Habitat. We enjoy the building process. I am not being snarky and I really interested in what you think people should do with their money.

Plus, a timing belt replacement is routine maintenance. Even if you bought the car new, it would still need to be done.

I can totally understand buying a luxury car. I don't understand buying them brand spanking new.

Well JMHO...from what I have read Hybrids are really not all that great at this time. They still have quite a way to go before they really make an impact on the environment, and reliability. I read a lot about Hybrids when we were car shopping a couple of years ago. The price tag for those was so high that it would have taken about 6 years to recoup to cost in gas. I didn't think that was worth it.
