Why should I support someone else?

Let me start by saying that I"m new here so this may have already been discussed, but this has come up in my office several times and I wanted to get some other views of this.

I do payroll for a rather small company so I know most of the workers and their wives (most of the workers are men due to the nature of our business). There are two in particular who's wives SAH. These two are up to their eyeballs in debt. I have bill collectors constantly calling for them. That part is really their business, it is annoying but I enjoy being rude back to the bill collectors, lol.

The part that bothers me is that both wives have been in the office wanting copies of X amount of check stubs so that they can go and get public assistance (I know because they told me that is what it is for)! Why should my tax money go so that these women can SAH? I know that not all families that one parent stays at home are like this, but I know lots that are. Heck, growing up we were always broke because my mother refused to work, but we weren't on any public assistance.

So, why should I pay for a woman to SAH? Why can't she go and get a job to support her family just like anyone else?

I was going to ask what you were talking about, but I found some news articles that explained it to me. :)

Read the thread; she said her mom wrote to her daily.

honestly,i think that sub-thread went through some unbelievable twists and turns.

i don't know what to believe after hearing that at 22,she relied less on mom and dad's influence because she was financially independent. but before that,it was all about being *sheltered*? i'm wondering now if it wasn't more of a mind game than feeling *sheltered* - poor parents take the blame while i get a free ride through college then after that,it's all about not feeling so influenced by them because i don't need their money, anymore. shrug.

my hope is that i don't raise my kids who later blame me for feeling sheltered, spoiled or other.

Just wanted to tell you that "I" finally got my own ipod-lol!! Yes, this was AFTER my dd which usually does not happen with big things like this.
My dh made some extra money and wanted to treat me to the ipod I REALLY wanted and not just one to "have one".
I can NOT wait to get it-do I have to take it off to hear the kids fight???!!!!

Yeah, but how many Rock Concerts did you go to growing up?

I see kids these days with Ipods in their ears hours and hours every day.

I am hoping before my son hits the mp3 age, that they make versions that have a maximum sound setting.

Yes, chatting is a two way conversation (once per week) and letter writing is one way (from her to me).

When my kids are older, I'll be nearing retirement age.

I think being sheltered, being financially dependent, and being emotionally dependent are all very different things.
