Why should I support someone else?

Let me start by saying that I"m new here so this may have already been discussed, but this has come up in my office several times and I wanted to get some other views of this.

I do payroll for a rather small company so I know most of the workers and their wives (most of the workers are men due to the nature of our business). There are two in particular who's wives SAH. These two are up to their eyeballs in debt. I have bill collectors constantly calling for them. That part is really their business, it is annoying but I enjoy being rude back to the bill collectors, lol.

The part that bothers me is that both wives have been in the office wanting copies of X amount of check stubs so that they can go and get public assistance (I know because they told me that is what it is for)! Why should my tax money go so that these women can SAH? I know that not all families that one parent stays at home are like this, but I know lots that are. Heck, growing up we were always broke because my mother refused to work, but we weren't on any public assistance.

So, why should I pay for a woman to SAH? Why can't she go and get a job to support her family just like anyone else?

No, it is obvious that you do not believe in it. However, how about mental illness, not just bad behavior? What about adults? Again, I understand being cautious, very cautious, about using meds on kids. However, how can you be "against" any and all drugs? How can you not "believe" in using medicines for illness?

Actually it's not me trying to make a mountain out of this, it's a real concern for the industry.

Have you ever lived with a child who has ADHD? Have you ever seen the difference the meds make in their school work?
I don't believe in medicating for every thing (children or adults) but when you deal with this day in and day out, you see why the child needs it.

did i say *all* drugs? don't create something i didn't say.

fwiw,i do think some meds are appropriate. if people are happy in their elements which include a credibility to zoloft or other anti-depressent,great. what i find debateable, very controversial is how it is we (general) define *normal*. normal apparently isn't the person flapping his arms on the street corner, iyo right? why and how is it you would define that to your children though you don't know him from adam? tia.

ITA, hysteria about medicine seems part of the uber-parenting landscape these days.

I was just joking because I have been to these parties and yes, EVERYONE knows they are fake but they are not cheap. The cheapest purse I have bought was a $35 FAKE Burberry which was very small (just a small bag to carry around if I go out with my dh alone). Most of them are priced from $50-$100.

It would be very sad if someone thought the $10 Rolex was real!!!
