Why should I support someone else?

Let me start by saying that I"m new here so this may have already been discussed, but this has come up in my office several times and I wanted to get some other views of this.

I do payroll for a rather small company so I know most of the workers and their wives (most of the workers are men due to the nature of our business). There are two in particular who's wives SAH. These two are up to their eyeballs in debt. I have bill collectors constantly calling for them. That part is really their business, it is annoying but I enjoy being rude back to the bill collectors, lol.

The part that bothers me is that both wives have been in the office wanting copies of X amount of check stubs so that they can go and get public assistance (I know because they told me that is what it is for)! Why should my tax money go so that these women can SAH? I know that not all families that one parent stays at home are like this, but I know lots that are. Heck, growing up we were always broke because my mother refused to work, but we weren't on any public assistance.

So, why should I pay for a woman to SAH? Why can't she go and get a job to support her family just like anyone else?

I think there was a clue when she called depression, "not feeling happy." LOL

I said that most drugs prescribed for mental illnesses don't have desirable recreational effects. Notice the *most* in the sentence. Care to give me an example?

Probably because you don't work in those industries and your livelihood isn't directly affected by the loss of income and sales. You're not the administrative assistant who hasn't had a raise in 3 or 4 years because of it. You're not in the sales staff who haven't had their normal bonuses. You don't work in shipping and haven't had your benefits and 401(k) matching contributions slashed or terminated altogether because of it.

It's not just megastars who lose by piracy of intellectual property, it's all the little people at those recording and distribution companies who lose out, too. And they lose out before any of the artists or executives do.

And don't even try to blame the artists and executives for that. That problem is the sole fault of people who steal by illegally downloading music and illegally burning CDs.

I stand by my reply to what you actually SAID. You're on your own for what you may or may not have meant.

I don't need to be a doctor to know that Oprah is unqualified to give medical opinions. Just like I'm not qualified to give medical opinions. Just like you're not qualified to give medical opinions.

I also don't need to be a doctor to know that Oprah is a self-aggrandizing celebrity wannabe-expert of everything. I just need eyes and ears and half an ounce of common sense.

Perhaps before you go much further, you should actually try to learn what it is you're speaking about.

It's not color imaging. It's magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). And it's used every bit as frequently in diagnosing non-mental illness as it is in mental disease. If you plan to throw out MRIs based on your biases wrt mental disease, please be advised that you are asking us to accept a 10- to 20-year step BACKWARD in the diagnoses of things like cancer and heart disease to name just two minor ailments that are routinely diagnosed by means of MRI.

John Gotti had employees, too. That doesn't make him a legitimate business man.

A couple of them give you Parkinson's symptoms (because they act on the dopamine receptors). I think most people would agree that shaking and moving very slowly is not exactly a cool high.

You really are a riot. There's no "theory" behind the Homeland Security Alert System,
