Why should I support someone else?

Let me start by saying that I"m new here so this may have already been discussed, but this has come up in my office several times and I wanted to get some other views of this.

I do payroll for a rather small company so I know most of the workers and their wives (most of the workers are men due to the nature of our business). There are two in particular who's wives SAH. These two are up to their eyeballs in debt. I have bill collectors constantly calling for them. That part is really their business, it is annoying but I enjoy being rude back to the bill collectors, lol.

The part that bothers me is that both wives have been in the office wanting copies of X amount of check stubs so that they can go and get public assistance (I know because they told me that is what it is for)! Why should my tax money go so that these women can SAH? I know that not all families that one parent stays at home are like this, but I know lots that are. Heck, growing up we were always broke because my mother refused to work, but we weren't on any public assistance.

So, why should I pay for a woman to SAH? Why can't she go and get a job to support her family just like anyone else?

no support necessary.

affordable colleges exist and will always exist. 40K a year, now is alot just like 20K was alot in the 80s. *one* (like poster craig asserted) doesn't need to be in that sort of college to get a good, quality education. my gp is proof of that. i suspect in 10 yeras,tx colleges will still hold their own wrt low tuition rates. unless of course, they feel a need to start competing with ivy league schools. i doubt that.

Affordable is subjective and with college costs rising each year, I certainly want something more than your assurances and your gp good fortune to base my children's college education on.

actually the tuition at the university of texas system is higher than alot of other states, including the states surrounding texas. if we were still in texas the only schools i would want my kids to go to would be smu or baylor and tuition there is anything but cheap.

even at state schools you are looking at 15K per year at a minimum. i certainly dont think my kids need an ivy league college expereince, which is good since they arent going to get one, but i do want them to go to the school that will best fit their goals and not be limited to the local community college.

How many times do I have to say I wouldn't be surprised? Even if they are the smartest, most well educated, highest earning people on the block, I would not want to associate with people who have little moral compass.

Actually, no one owns a copyright on diamonds so there is no intellectual theft going on.

In fact, some people might prefer to buy a CZ, because all of the corruption in the diamond industry, and for fear of getting a "blood diamond"

Supposedly the diamond industry is starting to certify that the origins of diamonds so that consumers could be aware if they were buying a "conflict" diamond (a blood dimaond) or no.

I didn't know about the corruption and blood baths associated with diamonds when I got engaged. Since then, my center diamond has popped out, and I have not replaced it. I might consider replacing it with a CZ. It doesn't fit now, but if I decide to get it re-sized, I may just have a CZ instead of a diamond put in.
