Why should I support someone else?

Let me start by saying that I"m new here so this may have already been discussed, but this has come up in my office several times and I wanted to get some other views of this.

I do payroll for a rather small company so I know most of the workers and their wives (most of the workers are men due to the nature of our business). There are two in particular who's wives SAH. These two are up to their eyeballs in debt. I have bill collectors constantly calling for them. That part is really their business, it is annoying but I enjoy being rude back to the bill collectors, lol.

The part that bothers me is that both wives have been in the office wanting copies of X amount of check stubs so that they can go and get public assistance (I know because they told me that is what it is for)! Why should my tax money go so that these women can SAH? I know that not all families that one parent stays at home are like this, but I know lots that are. Heck, growing up we were always broke because my mother refused to work, but we weren't on any public assistance.

So, why should I pay for a woman to SAH? Why can't she go and get a job to support her family just like anyone else?

Same here. I always wanted children and never considered not having them. I did wait until I felt I was stable enough to provide for them in the ways you mentioned, but to never have them simply because I might have to become a *thrift store* person? Cant imagine.

Dj-who shops at thrift stores because its FUN....

We bought a crib but ended up never using it. We had a bassinet in our room, co-slept, and then when ds was 2 he went to a toddler bed.

Where I live, the people who shop at thrift shops are ones who do are not middle-class working people. I work hard for my money and don't waste it on cigarettes and alcohol.

I used the bassinet for about week with my 2nd child and then he went right into the crib until 2.

pray tell, what does shopping at thrift stores have to do with wasting money on cigarettes and alcohol? and where i live someone who wouldnt shop at a thrift store is seen as a spendthrift and very wastful with money./ you really out to try it sometime - there is nothing better than getting that gap sweatshirt with the tags still on it for $2.00 or the A&F jeans for $5 that look like they were never worn.

I took may 12 dd to the "thrift store" on her birthday. She chose 2 pairs of jeans, 3 pairs of sweat pants, 2 tops for less than $25. She loves the new (to her) clothes. We may make a significant income (the US gov't says we're in the top 10% though we're at the very bottom of that), but we shop first in the thrift stores. We've all got our ice skates and baseball gloves at the same thrift store saving hundreds of dollars a year.

Because where I live, the people in the thrift shop are the ones who spend all their money on cigarettes and alcohol and their children's clothes are the last priority.
I NEVER pay full price at the Gap or Children's Place. Everything I buy is some kind of sale and I ALWAYS have some coupon I got in the mail. I don't have money to throw around but I also don't feel the need to buy my children used clothes from someone I have no clue who was wearing or what kind of house they came from. This is just my preference.

I guess you don't know the type of people who put their children's priorities last and their own first. I know too many people like that and it is so sad for the children that they go through life with clothes that don't fit or no jackets because they would rather buy cigarettes and go to bingo.
