Why should I support someone else?

Let me start by saying that I"m new here so this may have already been discussed, but this has come up in my office several times and I wanted to get some other views of this.

I do payroll for a rather small company so I know most of the workers and their wives (most of the workers are men due to the nature of our business). There are two in particular who's wives SAH. These two are up to their eyeballs in debt. I have bill collectors constantly calling for them. That part is really their business, it is annoying but I enjoy being rude back to the bill collectors, lol.

The part that bothers me is that both wives have been in the office wanting copies of X amount of check stubs so that they can go and get public assistance (I know because they told me that is what it is for)! Why should my tax money go so that these women can SAH? I know that not all families that one parent stays at home are like this, but I know lots that are. Heck, growing up we were always broke because my mother refused to work, but we weren't on any public assistance.

So, why should I pay for a woman to SAH? Why can't she go and get a job to support her family just like anyone else?

I agree, Old Navy is not the same quality as The Gap.

The only way I would buy clothes on ebay or a garage sale would be for them to have tags on them. I just do not like the idea of getting used clothes from someone I do not know and what kind of house they came from.

The type of people I live around go to thrift stores because they are wasting all their money on frivalous things and don't have the money to clothe their children. I am not saying ALL people who shop at thrift shops are like that. My gf at work used to go to one many years ago when she had no money.

Not everyone cleans their clothes in a timely matter. I would NOT wanting my children in clothes that were worn over and over without being washed or put in a corner for days. You just never know. I have seen the insides of people's homes and not everyone is clean.

No, my lifestyle is not expensive. I might live in an expensive area where the taxes are very high but we have no problem paying our bills every month and we are currently saving money every week.

But you have posted in the past that you could not save money.

And again, those are some huge generalizations about thrift store items.

You personally *know* all the people shopping at thrift stores in your area to make that kind of judgemental statement?

Yes, but there have been raises and we are now able to save. Right now we are trying to pay off our cc's so we can save more. It is hard with 2 kids in care but once my son gets into fulltime school, we will be able to save more.
I am sure there are some good things at thrift stores but I am just saying about the ones by me, which are far and few between.

They are very far and few between in my area and are aimed at low-income families. Just the exception of a gf at work who used to go to one when she had no money, I do not have any friends or family who go to any.

LOL! Don't you think that people *try on clothes* before they buy them? There is a good chance that the clothes that you buy at a regular store have already touched the bodies of lots of other people - and they certainly haven't been washed! Why do you think so many stores have professional grade steamers? To get the wrinkles and odours out of clothes from people wearing them!

I was once surprised by an impromptu survey on another board that showed a surprising number of people who "go commando"(do not wear underwear), LOL. Just think, one of those women might have just tried on your newest pair of jeans, LOL.
