Why should I support someone else?

Let me start by saying that I"m new here so this may have already been discussed, but this has come up in my office several times and I wanted to get some other views of this.

I do payroll for a rather small company so I know most of the workers and their wives (most of the workers are men due to the nature of our business). There are two in particular who's wives SAH. These two are up to their eyeballs in debt. I have bill collectors constantly calling for them. That part is really their business, it is annoying but I enjoy being rude back to the bill collectors, lol.

The part that bothers me is that both wives have been in the office wanting copies of X amount of check stubs so that they can go and get public assistance (I know because they told me that is what it is for)! Why should my tax money go so that these women can SAH? I know that not all families that one parent stays at home are like this, but I know lots that are. Heck, growing up we were always broke because my mother refused to work, but we weren't on any public assistance.

So, why should I pay for a woman to SAH? Why can't she go and get a job to support her family just like anyone else?

I agree but that was not what you originally wrote.

"No. I know the type of people who shop there and they are lower class people. I am not making an assumption. The thrift shops here are geared toward the lower income families."

Exactly. Considering the rampant consumerism of this country, I dont think shopping at goodwill is going to leave the needy naked.

You *know* everyone who shops there? Must be a small town.

And whats with equating lower class with lower income? Thats quite the elitist statement (again).

The people I personally know are low class. I am sure not all are, especially in other states but I am just saying how it is where I live.

We had 1 thrift shop in my town and it closed due to no customers. I only know of 1 or 2 more in other towns. Where I live there are divisions of towns of lower income, middle income and high income. The lower income areas are made up of mostly low-class people. I am not saying all low-income families are low-lifes but I don't know many who are not, just speaking from my point of view and area of where I live.

I agree and I have never shopped there because I can not afford the clothing. My neighbor gets clearance items so cheap, $1.50 here, $2 there that for the amount of time her kids grow out of them, they are worth it.
Because everyone is throwing out how cheap a thrift shop is, I just got a t-shirt at the Gap Outlet, with my 20% discount for $1.59. You CAN shop thrifty without going to a thrift shop.

But the Gap outlet's clothes aren't the same as clothes in the regular Gap store--surely you know that? Gap manufactures clothes specifically for their outlet stores. So buying a $1.50 t-shirt at

I have been buying the clothes there and the Gap for many years and they are both quality and have lasted (for myself) for many many years. My daughter also wears the fleece sweatshirts for a couple of seasons. Most of the clothes are just last seasons that they won't sell in the regular store and ship to the Outlets. Children's Place is the same way and the quality is exactly the same. We used to have an Old Navy Outlet that was great too but they closed down many years ago.
