Why should I support someone else?

Let me start by saying that I"m new here so this may have already been discussed, but this has come up in my office several times and I wanted to get some other views of this.

I do payroll for a rather small company so I know most of the workers and their wives (most of the workers are men due to the nature of our business). There are two in particular who's wives SAH. These two are up to their eyeballs in debt. I have bill collectors constantly calling for them. That part is really their business, it is annoying but I enjoy being rude back to the bill collectors, lol.

The part that bothers me is that both wives have been in the office wanting copies of X amount of check stubs so that they can go and get public assistance (I know because they told me that is what it is for)! Why should my tax money go so that these women can SAH? I know that not all families that one parent stays at home are like this, but I know lots that are. Heck, growing up we were always broke because my mother refused to work, but we weren't on any public assistance.

So, why should I pay for a woman to SAH? Why can't she go and get a job to support her family just like anyone else?

I have seen SO many families where the parents come first. My dh's mother ALWAYS had money for bingo and cigarettes but he said he wore hand me downs and clothes that just did not fit.

You'll never know if a used item at the thrift store has ever been washed. Nice try.

Oh please, that's a load of BS. I've had clothes from high end stores (and Gap, Children's Place and Target do not fit that definition) that have shrunk. My daughter's jeans from Gap shrunk in the washer and were then too short for her.

Do you have growing children? I have 3 that have favorite clothes that they hate to give up even when they're too tight and too short. They have clothes in their closets that fit them correctly, but I do let them dress themselves for the most part. When things get really short, tight, or worn, I remove them from their clothing rotation, though my children have sometimes have managed to find them and wear them again. Their clothes are always clean, they usually match (though my sons are color challenged) and are comfortable and appropriate for their activities.

When I see a kid with too short or tight clothes, I see a kid in the mist of a growth spirt or a kid who won't give up a favorite pair of pants if they are otherwise clean and well-groomed; these kids have not developed your fashion sense yet, they often think they look great.

Heh! As we all know, it is routine procedure for the police to wash the clothes of murder victims before storing them for evidence. Yet, despite this bit of housekeeping, DNA evidence does survive to make or break cases later. They wear latex gloves at the crime scene because they don't want to get their hands dirty before throwing the evidence in the washer/dryer down at police headquarters.

it's pretty simple to tell whether or not an item has been washed. Really, it's not rocket science!

I don't assume their clothes are clean. But luckily, I have a washer/dryer of my own. And a box of detergent which listed the organisms it could kill before Tide yanked that unpopular ad campaign.

That's what tape measures are for.

The thrift shop is next to the grocery store - I can go in each week. Sometimes weeks go by without me buying anything, but I usually check it out.

That's about all the shopping I have the stomach for, all other purchases are made online.
