Why should I support someone else?

Let me start by saying that I"m new here so this may have already been discussed, but this has come up in my office several times and I wanted to get some other views of this.

I do payroll for a rather small company so I know most of the workers and their wives (most of the workers are men due to the nature of our business). There are two in particular who's wives SAH. These two are up to their eyeballs in debt. I have bill collectors constantly calling for them. That part is really their business, it is annoying but I enjoy being rude back to the bill collectors, lol.

The part that bothers me is that both wives have been in the office wanting copies of X amount of check stubs so that they can go and get public assistance (I know because they told me that is what it is for)! Why should my tax money go so that these women can SAH? I know that not all families that one parent stays at home are like this, but I know lots that are. Heck, growing up we were always broke because my mother refused to work, but we weren't on any public assistance.

So, why should I pay for a woman to SAH? Why can't she go and get a job to support her family just like anyone else?

I see your point and you are probably a great parent and care what your children wear. I am talking from experience of children and their parents who I have known who are spending their money elsewhere on frivoulous things while their children are ALWAYS wearing too big or too small clothes. A shirt that is loved is one thing but not a whole wardrobe.

I am just talking from experience and yes, I know that Old Navy is owned by Gap. Their clothes are not as quality though as Gap.

My kids are so skinny that their jeans (especially my daughter) can be worn for at least 2 years, maybe more! She has soooo many jeans because of this. I only get rid of them when they get too short as she just grows up, not out!!

I never said it did. My point is that these clothes are worn by other people over and over. I have more of a problem of not knowing what kind of house they came from than the shrinkage idea.

A while ago I answered that question. I said not ALL are like that but if I know people who use these shops and know how they treat their kids, I am sure there are tons out there like that. My experiences in life are not one and only. It is the same everywhere you go in the world. Sometimes people just don't see all types of life out there. I have seen from rich to poor in my 30 years and different situations in each.

In this day and age, being a millionare doesnt mean much either. A million dollars doesnt have the value it used to.

Check your tags. Gap does not ship overruns to their outlets, they specifically manufacture clothing for their outlets. At any given time, the merchandise at the Gap store and Gap outlet are different.

Most outlet stores (including Children's Place) specifically manufacture clothing for the outlet stores. This summer I was looking for a dress for my niece that

Okay, this is getting down right silly! I've bought thrift store clothes for myself and my kids and we've never looked the worse for wear. We've never caught a weird disease or come home with scabies or anything else being insinuated. Thats ridiculous. I also don't buy undergarments at thrift stores and I'm not sure who does. I have bought shoes. I've found brand-new with the tags still on them clothing at Goodwill and I'm still wearing them. Furthermore I've found the Gap to be way too expensive and of similar quality to Target and (horrors) Wal-Mart-I'm not paying more for jeans for my kid than myself. Equal maybe, but not more. State all you like that $40 jeans hold up better than $15 jeans but I've yet to see it except with one brand and that is Levi's. Even those I'll only buy on clearance.

That is extreme prejudice, to make a judgement about an entire group based on your own (and obviously very limited) life experience.

My grandmother, who had 11 siblings, will often tell us that she and her sisters had one dress each. Not one for school, one for church, one for play-just one. Yet they've all managed to make into a very ripe, relatively healthy old age.
