Why should I support someone else?

Let me start by saying that I"m new here so this may have already been discussed, but this has come up in my office several times and I wanted to get some other views of this.
I do payroll for a rather small company so I know most of the workers and their wives (most of the workers are men due to the nature of our business). There are two in particular who's wives SAH. These two are up to their eyeballs in debt. I have bill collectors constantly calling for them. That part is really their business, it is annoying but I enjoy being rude back to the bill collectors, lol.
The part that bothers me is that both wives have been in the office wanting copies of X amount of check stubs so that they can go and get public assistance (I know because they told me that is what it is for)! Why should my tax money go so that these women can SAH? I know that not all families that one parent stays at home are like this, but I know lots that are. Heck, growing up we were always broke because my mother refused to work, but we weren't on any public assistance.
So, why should I pay for a woman to SAH? Why can't she go and get a job to support her family just like anyone else?

Your statement: "who doesn't if you work and have a boss-lol!"
This doesn't have anything to do with where someone's money comes from. It assumes though that all bosses are millionares, which is completely untrue. Some bosses are millionares, but I would wager a majority are not.

I don't need jeans for my kids to last longer than 6 or 8 months, so if they wear out in a year, it doesn't matter to me. I go to yard sales, pay two bucks for my child's jeans, and he wears them until he outgrows them and I sell them for a dollar at my next yard sale. How is that not saving money over paying even ten bucks at the Gap Outlet sale? Don't get me wrong, I do buy from the retail stores occasionally, but if I can find a bargain at yard sales or thrift shops, I'm happy.
I bought three pairs of jeans, my favorite brand and my exact size recently at a yard sale. The lady explained she had bought them new, never worn them, gotten pregnant and never been that size again. So what if the Jeans were two years old? I only wear blue jeans around the house; my vacuum cleaner does not care that they might not be the latest cut.
You keep acting as if your experience and your logic are universal. They are not.
It's not, unless you're into stylin' and profilin'.

You don't know my husband - He walks around with a bottle of club soda for those pesky ketchup and paint accidents.
My DH has to be presentable at work and he likes egyptian cotton shirts (initialed, it's a little pretentious) and we can afford them. He is also very content in his thrift store outfits for casual wear. My children may has one or two good church/wedding type outfits that are probably not 2nd hand, but they have a surprisingly light formal event schedule, so wearing 2nd hand clothing usually is appropriate for most occasions.
