Why should I support someone else?

Let me start by saying that I"m new here so this may have already been discussed, but this has come up in my office several times and I wanted to get some other views of this.

I do payroll for a rather small company so I know most of the workers and their wives (most of the workers are men due to the nature of our business). There are two in particular who's wives SAH. These two are up to their eyeballs in debt. I have bill collectors constantly calling for them. That part is really their business, it is annoying but I enjoy being rude back to the bill collectors, lol.

The part that bothers me is that both wives have been in the office wanting copies of X amount of check stubs so that they can go and get public assistance (I know because they told me that is what it is for)! Why should my tax money go so that these women can SAH? I know that not all families that one parent stays at home are like this, but I know lots that are. Heck, growing up we were always broke because my mother refused to work, but we weren't on any public assistance.

So, why should I pay for a woman to SAH? Why can't she go and get a job to support her family just like anyone else?

When my daughter was 5 and I was in labor with my son, we were sitting down while I was having contractions and she said to me "What do you want to do, do you want to take about fashion?". I will never forget that. I laughed so hard (inbetween the contractions) because it was so cute. She was really trying so hard to get my mind off the pain!

With the hand me downs of two older sisters, I literally never had to buy any clothes for DD3 when she was younger. But I always did make sure to buy her at one new outfit per season.

I was the oldest in my family, but I got lots of hand-me downs from my cousins. I still got new clothes though. My sister wore a lot of my clothes, but she always got new clothes too. I am saving all of DDs clothes to had down to any future children I have. If when I'm done with them, they are still in good shape, I'll either see if anyone in the family can use them or I'll donate them somewhere.

I think that fewer kids wear hand-me downs now than in the past in part because families are smaller.

Yes. There are germs everywhere and I think that saying one wouldnt shop at a thrift shop because they are afraid of germs is completely illogical.

Yes I know, you've made these statements before. But the fact remains that a gently used car (often still under warranty) can be purchased for THOUSANDS less than a new car. Still can be driven for many years with minimal repairs/maintenance. A car is an expense and should be kept as minimal as possible-ask any financial expert.

I have an 8 year old girl and all she cares about with regard to clothing is that the clothes are comfortable, and that she can run around and climb trees easily.

My parents were not big spenders and always bought frugal cars. They didn't care what they looked like (ummm...as we got older we did-lol!) but they wanted something reliable since my dad worked almost an hour away from home. They have maintenaned their cars the best I have ever seen anyone do and have never had any problems as they always did everything before something happened.
My father also knew exactly what he wanted to spend and never left the dealer without a new car with a different price. He was VERY financially saave (sp?!).
