Will my child remember that I was a SAHM

It struck me today that she might not.

I was sure I was doing the best thing for my children by staying home with them (two daughters-3 years old, and 4 months old). As I was talking to a dear aunt of mine (whose daughter is a working mother, since her infant was 12 weeks old), I felt my defensive bristles go up.

She went on and on about how "If she could do it all over again....she wouldn't have stayed home....." Then she told me a story in which her ds said to her, "mom, did you stay at home with us, or did you drop us off at daycare?" She almost died when he asked her that, because she stayed at home with her ds and dd until he entered kindergarten. Granted, many kindergartners haven't formed lasting memories by that age yet...but still. It got me thinking; is this ALL WORTH IT?

She was using it in her argument against staying at home. I have a Masters Degree in Counseling that I am not using. My career lies dormant at this time. We don't have cable, newspaper service, vacations, frills of any kind, new cars, etc. because of our money situation. We are middle-class and have sacrificed SO MUCH...only for me to hear from my aunt that..."her daughter needs to work to maintain their lifestyle." Yeah, driving a Volvo, she probably does....

I just need to hear from some of you who frequent this board and have solid opinions one way or the other on this topic.

I understand that. I just think that there is more severe theft going on that should be attended to before a pocketbook party.

Ladies,

Please remember to keep the debate ON TOPIC, and not allow it to turn into a personal issue with personal attacks. Attacking someones' spelling, grammar, or choice of phrases to use does NOT add to the discussion, and very often turns into a personal attack. In order to avoid closing threads, we need your cooperation!

Feel free to re-read the Rules of Play, and enjoy your debate! :)

I drive a Toyota b/c of their known reliability. However, over Mem Day Weekend when we were on vacation at the beach, the electrical/computer system in my car somehow got "fried" as the mechanic put it. Coincidentally, lightning struck a tree ten feet from my Toyota (and scared the beegeezus out of us as it was the loudest boom/explosion I've ever heard - my ears were ringing for 30 mins afterward. We are convinced that is what caused the problems with my Toyota. The lightning also tripped the circuit for everything in the kitchen though all but the stovetop hood came back on. Thank God my car was still under warranty and we were given a loaner b/c it spent 10 days in the dealership down at the beach while they replaced numerous parts trying to figure out what the problem was. I finally just got it back last Friday, but now I'm worried that there will be lasting problems! Keeping my fingers crossed that since they replaced so much, it will actually keep the car running longer, but I will freak if there are lasting mechanical problems! I plan on driving it into the ground.

I haven't finished the thread so I'm sure others have answered this question. At our elem. school, afterschool care takes place ON school grounds - no trips off campus. The kids rotate b/w being in a classroom working on homework to being outside on the playground/blacktop.

While I've never used aftercare at our children's school (private), nor at the public schools here, it is my understanding based on conversations with my friends, that aftercare kids remain at the school for the entire time. I've never heard of them leaving campus. I'm sure it might happen in other districts but it doesn't seem to be the norm here.

I forgot to add to my original post to you, that our school has enrichment programs afterschool that run usually from 3-4pm so many of the kids in aftercare participate in these programs (which are on campus). Our school also doesn't offer before care so it simply isn't possible for children to be at school for 12 hours. They can be dropped off as early as 7:30 to line up on the blacktop for the start of school, then aftercare ends sat 5:30pm so it isn't even possible to be on the school campus for 12 hrs! While I don't pretend to know how it is at every school in the US, I've never heard of a school offering so much before/after care such that the kids could even be AT school for 12 hrs a day.

I love when people make this statement. Police are hired to enforce the law. Not pick and chose what laws to enforce and what laws not to enforce. If you want more crimes like murder, drunk driving, robberies, etc tended to then stop bogging them down with breaking federal law by selling counterfeit purses. If they didnt have a couple of LEO working on stuff like that they would have more LEO in the streets to handle big crime. How many times do you think my DH has heard when he used to write speeding tickets that he should be out catching real criminals. Everyone has their *issues* with what laws police should enforce. It is really hilarious.

Personally, I have never heard of anyone getting busted at parties here (yes, I have provided stories). They are mostly busting the flea markets as it is a bigger business. These people just go back after a few weeks and continue selling. I actually saw some the other day out for all to see which I was very surprised. I think the better fakes are in the back though.
Speeding is something I would encourage the cops to stop people for as we have a big problem with that where I live.
Personally, I have asked the girls at work if they would rather have a handbag party or food party. I want to do the food so people can sit and relax than just come and go because there is no seating. They want both but would rather have the food so that will be my next party (as soon as my kitchen is totally done-should be done this week).

That responsibility falls to the Gonzales' Justice dept.

i see your point but i understand what mbanc is saying,too.....all it takes is a little investigation or one loud mouth to blow the whistle and those illegal purse parties become history.........a local television station in houston has an undercover investigation team that literally blows the whistle on plenty of problems from one little tip. a favorite consignment shop of mine here was one of them - super, super sweet couple from nyc owns this shop but they'ev been selling fake pradas (sp) for years and finally got called on it. they're still in business but are *not* selling those handbags anymore.
