Will my child remember that I was a SAHM

It struck me today that she might not.

I was sure I was doing the best thing for my children by staying home with them (two daughters-3 years old, and 4 months old). As I was talking to a dear aunt of mine (whose daughter is a working mother, since her infant was 12 weeks old), I felt my defensive bristles go up.

She went on and on about how "If she could do it all over again....she wouldn't have stayed home....." Then she told me a story in which her ds said to her, "mom, did you stay at home with us, or did you drop us off at daycare?" She almost died when he asked her that, because she stayed at home with her ds and dd until he entered kindergarten. Granted, many kindergartners haven't formed lasting memories by that age yet...but still. It got me thinking; is this ALL WORTH IT?

She was using it in her argument against staying at home. I have a Masters Degree in Counseling that I am not using. My career lies dormant at this time. We don't have cable, newspaper service, vacations, frills of any kind, new cars, etc. because of our money situation. We are middle-class and have sacrificed SO MUCH...only for me to hear from my aunt that..."her daughter needs to work to maintain their lifestyle." Yeah, driving a Volvo, she probably does....

I just need to hear from some of you who frequent this board and have solid opinions one way or the other on this topic.

Ah come on....you need to know all of their financial details as well as all of the personal details of their lives as well.

What does being involved in the school have to do with knowing the parents of the students?

...not to mention the fact that some of us cling quite proudly to the banner of being 'as uninvolved as possible" I mean hey...SOMEONE has to.....

and frankly the one time I did volunteer to help with the chrismtas cookie decorating when liza was in kindergarten was enough thankyou very much...;-)

No single raindrop belives it is responsible for the flood.

Are you actually claiming that designers embrace counterfeiting?

Who said anything about knowing the intimate financial details of friends? LOL. Libbyfaith said she knows "generally" whether a family utilizing b/a care has a sahp or not. If that's what you call intimate friendships, I'm glad my friendships are more meaningful and open than that!

That's great. I'm an unemployed good-for-nothing according to this board, so I can spend a lot more time volunteering at the schools than if I worked.

Is there really much that parent-volunteers can do at a parochial school? My friends' children attend a Catholic grammar and there's little she can do unless she becomes class parent.

Do they still have a Women's Club in Catholic schools? They did in my day when I went to Catholic. (I don't know if they had a men's club though!) It was a great idea and a great way to make even more friends, IMO.

I'm just not a room-mom type ... and I probably woulnd't be if I sAHM either. I dunno there seem to be moms that cover classes on Fridays when there's a teachers meeting, there is a parents group that organizes the fundraisers and field day events --so I'm sure there are ways to be involved if one wants to...I jsut haven't come across anything that I think i'd be terribly good at frankly unless any of the kids needed a primer in American Pop Culture or needed to learn how to do a good time step...;-)

PKA said she was involved at school so I was very surprised she didn't know even 11 families. Because I'm involved and go into the schools frequently to help out, I see these parents often and have made a large network of friends and acquaintances. It's unavoidable - but maybe we volunteers all talk to each other too much? Hey, ya get what ya pay for!

How does being involved in the school equal being involved in individual families lives, knowing all of the financial and personal details of individuals?

Did you have to submit financial records in order to attend school or something?
