WOH and sleeping issues

We were at a dinner party last night at the home of one of dh's coworkers. They have 2 boys, 6 and 4. They have a bunch of sleeping issues (kids 'scared' at night, won't fall asleep in their own bed, won't go to bed without mom or dad cuddling them, etc.) The mom blames herself because since she works all day and misses them so much she tends to cuddle with them late at night and they fall asleep in a pile on the bed all together. She said that if she SAH, they wouldn't have the same issues.

I sah. For us, bed time is a rigid, welcome respite at the end of the day. Dh has no desire to keep them up either, lol.

That neither means I'd never have a housekeeper nor that I'd never go back to work. That means both I wouldn't want to use a housekeeper to keep an eye on my child and I wouldn't need one five days a week in any event.

I worked every break longer than one week.

Wow! I think thats terrible that you get such limited vacation time. Do you get more the longer you are with your firm? Is that pretty normal for those who work in the legal field? Seems like very minimal time.

And like I said, if you wanted to make it happen, you make it happen. I always budgeted for travel, even when things were tight otherwise. I guess I dont see why you would feel like you are *missing out* when it comes to travel, when you *could* travel but choose not to. You find traveling with small children too stressful, and again-thats a choice.

But why would that leave you shellshocked? You were never around infants or small children until you had your own? Never read a book on child development? I dont get being totally overwhelmed by it, unless you just had NO one around you who had children. Did you babysit as a teen at all? Why would a blissful childhood lead to you not understanding the difficulties in caring for infants and toddlers?

As far as the good *cover* thing-I was thrilled to be able to legitimately go to kid movies, the zoo, play with playdough, disneyland, etc. I think partially because I delayed having children, all the *kid things* were a great novelty to me! I loved it!

I married dh at 23, started dating at 17. If we had waited 2 more years to marry *I* don't think I would have had a different outlook on things at the time.

Associates in large law firms are typically required to meet high annual billable hour budgets, which makes it difficult to take much time off. When I left my firm, I was entitled to three weeks vacation annually, but my schedule often prevented me from actually taking the time off. In-house lawyers (like Felica, I believe) usually have more predictable schedules, so they are probably more likely to actually use their vacation time.

I guess thats the downside to working for the big bucks!!

By the time I left my old career, I got 5 wks paid vacation a year and unlimited unpaid (as long as I got someone to cover me, which was easy). My dh just started a new job and he starts with 3 wks paid, eventually going up to 6 wks.
