WOH or SAH? 2 issues to consider

It seems to me that the decision to work outside the home (WOH) or stay-at-home (SAHM) involves TWO essential questions (the second of which seems to receive less attention in some forums and by some parents):

The second issue only is the primary concern if the answer to #1 is No. If you can't financially swing being a SAHP, and MUST work, then #2 is secondary.

I am willing to bet that these discussions do not even happen in the true working poor America.

Yes, we need money to be able to afford to maintain our homes and raise our children. But

I think the point is that nobody with two brain cells to rub together would put their children in anything other than good quality care if they had any kind of choice. But the people with the most options for good quality care tend to be people who could choose to stay home if they couldn't find reliable care. Nobody with any kind of parenting chops puts her kids in a mediocre center or makes a latchkey kid out of an eight year old if she has better options. It's just that for some people, options are pretty thin on the ground. And it's much easier to bash the upper middle class lady with the good nanny than it is to do something for the single mother whose kid has been on the aftercare program waiting list for fifteen months.

If I cancel my cable, I have $50.00 extra a month AND can't even watch the red sox!

No Channel 68 if you Cancel Cable?

I'm sorry. Living without Red Sox baseball from April to October equates to prison for a true fan.

I've never had these discussions outside of this board

I have had words on this in one form of another over the past 6 years.

I don't think I could live without the Daily Show and the Colbert Report. I am so excited they are back on the air tonight!!!!

If a mom SAH usually the family is fairly financially secure in the first place.

I really wish that were so, but there are so many examples of educated, informed people on good salaries skimping on daycare.
