It seems to me that the decision to work outside the home (WOH) or stay-at-home (SAHM) involves TWO essential questions (the second of which seems to receive less attention in some forums and by some parents):

In my marriage, decisions this large are made jointly.

You realize that those aren't the only two choices, right? that those are two extremes and that there are lots of grays in between. And that many SAHPs have fancy homes and cars and many WOHPs have simpler lives where their kids see them.

AND, of course, dontchaknow, those millions of chldren that are raped and abused daily are only the ones with Working Mothers. Rapists and kidnappers and perverts are very selective in their victims. They do a thorough check and wouldn't ever hurt a child that had a SAHM.
