WOH/Kids/Feminism: WDYT?

Okay, let's debate something else. One morning a few months ago, I was crabby to DH about having to get ready for work. DH said, "Well, if you don't want to go to work, quit!"

Later that day, I told him I was just venting, and then I told him some of the reasons I really do like WOH. One reason was something to the effect that I wanted to WOH as part of at-home feminism for our DD's. He said he had no idea what I was talking about.

I thought about it some and decided that although this is a heartfelt idea for me, it's still fuzzy. I suppose I meant that I want to show my DDs how to live independently of a man, in the sense of income, ability to make one's way in the world, and so on, even if they choose marriage & kids. My feelings of pride in my own mom, who was a WOH mom, come into it, too.

Caution: I don't mean in any way to suggest anything the least bit negative about SAH moms. That's not what this is about. Nor do I mean to suggest that anyone has to WOH to teach their kids feminist or gender neutral values. That's not what this is about, either.

Do you think there's any value in WOH as part of raising kids? Please help me clarify my thinking.

I am impessed. I wonder of produce costs less in certain parts of the country. How do you buy meat that way? Is there a special type of vendor who sells you the whole animal and then butchers it? How do you store so much meat?

That must be why we spend so much. Except for Avocados we eat all that stuff. I like to cook and my kids like to eat. I spend alot (maybe to much) on food.

Your point was that even to the people who do it, an hourlong commute is unreasonable. I disagree. I don't know anyone who has a 15-minute commute. It's really not an option. Even if you lived two miles from your office in Boston, you'd probably walk it, which would take a half hour.
Congratulations! I'm so happy to hear it. I just heard the good news and popped back over, just in case you were still checking in.

I believe you. But I honestly don't know anyone who thinks an hourlong commute is unreasonable. We all do it. It's not something we even question. When DH tells people he takes a 45-minute boat to work, followed by a 15-minute walk, they say stuff like, "Nice!" It's considered an easy, easy commute.
Congratulations! I'm so happy to hear it. I just heard the good news and popped back over, just in case you were still checking in.

I also buy organic veggies and dairy, although I don't buy organic meat (I buy natural, vegetarian fed meat, but not necessarily organic) and I spend less (around $200 per week). We also eat fish, and virtually no processed foods. We are done with diapers.

I'll answer for my family. . .and I'm not including dh as purchase of his uniforms comes from a 'clothing allowance' and he RARELY buys new civilian clothes.

***heh....am I misrepresenting you? Or just misrepresenting your new edited posts....it's so hard to keep up with such moving targets.***

Considering that any posts I've edited have been done right after posting and have addressed typos and other content that doesn't change the meaning or scope of my posts, I think you're reaching here. Not everyone who uses the edit feature is doing so to change their meaning.

***But even assuming you've been saying the whole thing all along, your opinion on this topic is so obviously biased. You presume that "anyone" can make up for a bad school system by homeschooling...***

And therein lies your misunderstanding. Where have I said that *anyone* can/should do *anything*??? I've said what I've said as *some examples* of *options* that people have *depending on their priorities and situation/choices.*

***but that presupposes the *PARENT* already has a good education. How does the parent who didn't get a good education give his or her child one? How does the parent who has to hold down a job just to get by homeschool? How does the parent who relies on vehicle sharing with the other parent access all those resources that you claim are so readily available to everyone everywhere?***

Again- your mistake/misunderstanding.

***And as long as we're discussing what we find "highly amusing," I find it highly amusing how you continue to refuse to discuss my *posts* but continually make personal comments about me.***

Examples?
