WOH/Kids/Feminism: WDYT?

Okay, let's debate something else. One morning a few months ago, I was crabby to DH about having to get ready for work. DH said, "Well, if you don't want to go to work, quit!"

Later that day, I told him I was just venting, and then I told him some of the reasons I really do like WOH. One reason was something to the effect that I wanted to WOH as part of at-home feminism for our DD's. He said he had no idea what I was talking about.

I thought about it some and decided that although this is a heartfelt idea for me, it's still fuzzy. I suppose I meant that I want to show my DDs how to live independently of a man, in the sense of income, ability to make one's way in the world, and so on, even if they choose marriage & kids. My feelings of pride in my own mom, who was a WOH mom, come into it, too.

Caution: I don't mean in any way to suggest anything the least bit negative about SAH moms. That's not what this is about. Nor do I mean to suggest that anyone has to WOH to teach their kids feminist or gender neutral values. That's not what this is about, either.

Do you think there's any value in WOH as part of raising kids? Please help me clarify my thinking.

Well why didn't you just say so in the first place? Believe it or not, "sold a house" is not shorthand for "parent turned into an *ss WRT both myself and my mother and I just lost the love of my life." The latter, I'd have understood. The former? I'm surprised even the many mother hens on this board who love nothing so much as a sob story started flapping and clucking.

I'm not mocking grief, and if you'd read more carefully you might have seen I said mourning (you know, grief) would be understandable. I am mocking the big overblown fuss that's being made by you and others to the point where it's suggested that not undergoing TRAUMA due to such a thing would be somehow lacking. My goodness, where's Dr. Phil when the board needs him.

Same here. I had a two-hour each way commute for 14 mos., two years from then DH had a commute which was an hour minimum each way, three if it was a Friday and/or it was raining. People can get used to nearly anything, and in the Boston area, it's a good thing. (His under 1/2 hr. commute now seems ridiculously short to him.)

In rural areas it's not necessarily the time, but the mileage, which racks up. It's not uncommon at all where I grew up to drive 35-40 miles to work.

I'm afraid I don't know you very well. Have you ever WOH?

That would pretty much describe where I live.

I am impressed. I am currently trying to use our grocery budget of $800/month more effectively. This is an area that I definately need to be more organized in for sure!~Lisa

OK, I gotta ask - why are you being so mocking? You think it isn't possible for someone to teach themselves programming out of a book and then actually create a useful program to fill a gap not addressed in out-of-the-box systems?

Because you pretty much described my job for the last 7 months.

Oh, I could spent it. We'd be eating asparagus, strawberries, fresh pineapple, avocados, salmon, tilapia, pork loin, shrimp, crab cakes, mangoes, papayas ...

Choose your friends by their character and your socks by their color.  Choosing your socks by their character makes no sense and choosing your friends by their color is unthinkable.
