Na, it's been mentioned a couple of times.

Perhaps universal is not the right word....although, I have never heard deployment compared to auto accidents before.

<>

right there is where you are wrong. There are hundreds of thousands of soldiers that KNEW they would be deployed when they enlisted.

<>

Actually, no. The probabability of being deployed is between 50-75%, depending on the branch; the probability of being in a car accident is about 3%.

Data for the % figure for car crashes: In 2000, there were 217,293,000 registered vehicles; there were 6,393,409 crashes; there were 2,693,064,000,000 miles traveled. -- That's a 2.9% vehicle/crash rate. And only a .000023% mile/crash rate. -- from http://www.car-accidents.com/pages/stats/2000_killed.html

Data for the deployment figures: "In their first term, about half of Army and Air Force enlisted personnel, two-thirds of Marine Corps personnel, and three-quarters of Navy personnel had at least one deployment. " from http://www.rand.org/pubs/research_briefs/RB7557/index1.html The data includes only deployments that are a separation of 30 days or more. So the %age rate is actually higher when you include shorter deployments or TDY.

How do you know that? Have you spoke to each and everyone of them?

< that focus on children with dyslexia.>>

Yes? And? There ARE plenty of programs in public schools that focus on children with dyslexia. Shoot, my dh was in elementary school in the 70s and was in a program to deal with his dyslexia.

My cousin signed up for the marines (pre 9/11) because he knew he would be deployed and he very much wanted to be deployed.

No I haven't spoken to each and every one of them, but I was asked to speak to any solider...and I have spoken to quite a few (lots of them in dh's family) and a couple in mine....and I have read the comments of military families on this board...I have chosen to listen and believe what is being said and written which agree with my comments.
