To be frank, the original point was that a person who has children and *chooses* to join the military is pretty much willfully leaving their children for months at a time. PKA's first post on the subject....

"One is choice the other is not. That's the difference. Military life is a choice."

Your reply :

"Being deployed is NOT a choice."

PKA's reply to that

"Yes it is. It's part of signing up for military duty. If one doesn't want to be deployed, then one chooses not to sign up for the military."

She is pretty clear that deployment is a choice in that it is a consequence of choosing military life. Do you disagree that someone could choose not to be deployed by never signing up in the first place?

I believe enlisting or not enlisting is a choice. However when (we will use wartime as an example)when we are at war the soldier is not given a choice whether to be deployed or not. He/She is told to go and that is it. That is pretty much the concensus I got from the Military Wives board as well.

I think "conscientous objector" only has meaning when there is a draft. It all sounds a little too convenient to suddenly discover an objection so profound that one can't even work with injured soldiers but only AFTER med school is paid for. I think somebody whose objections were that deep would have figured it out before spending that much of the government's $$ on tuition.

I know a lot about you!! You're a good speller, you can write a sentence that can be easily understood, you have fabulous grammar! (Apparently, not cheap enough, though!)

I can see a pacifist epiphany. What I CAN'T see is how pacifism is incompatible with saving the lives of injured soldiers in a war zone. It just looks more crass opportunism than actual pacifist epiphany.

And I have said that I agree with that statement. What you have not answered is whether or not a person has any way of ensuring that they will not be deployed and be forced to spend months away from their children. My opinion is that yes, they can ensure that by not enlisting.
