I can see how there would be time in the day for a preschooler, but I admit to being pretty strict about it. (I'm lucky that my kids were way easier than yours. ;)) We had only one tv when they were little, and I limited them to half an hour a day. DD1 was never very interested anyway, and dd21 always had dd1 to play with, so it wasn't much of an issue. Neither of them has much interest in TV now, but we do occasionally rent videos, and they enjoy watching a bunch of junk tv when they sleep over at dh's parents every now and then.

ah there's always time -- we like watching Clean Sweep together in the morning over breakfast -- and of course there are high holy days like oscar night.....

I've always watched tons of tv and look at me -- smart self supporting adult who can KICK YOUR ASS in jeopardy or trivial pursuit LOL -- I'm really not too concerned about it.

Sounds like your "rules" are similar. My kids like root beer too, but they don't choose that as often. I also don't like them to have anything "diet" or with artificial sweeteners either.

It amazes me how many of their friends are allowed to drink Coke/Pepsi or other caffeinated drinks.

I have no idea if my enforcement of good drinking habits will carry over with them to their teenage and adult years. However, I grew up in a similar household where soda/juice/etc was only for special occasions (I'm sure I had it even less than my kids b/c we rarely even ate out when I was growing up). I think that's part of the reason why I like water so much. Dh, OTOH, had a mother who drank Coke all the time and had it in the house for the kids to drink when they were growing up. All of dh's siblings drink at least one soda every day and all depend on caffeine to get them through their day. Dh used to drink a lot of Coke but now he only drinks it occasionally.

My friends are amazed that I don't drink coffee or some other caffeinated drink on a daily basis. "How in the world do you get through a day with four kids w/o caffeine?" they ask me. I've never ever had any desire to drink coffee so my body has never craved it.

I love the oscars (a friend has an annual party where we all bet on the winners), but we don't have cable, so I'm gonna horrify you by saying I haven't even heard of clean sweep or how I met your mother......;) Sometimes I think about getting cable just for the daily show, though.
