I believe that only the front door is left unlocked. Kids have ID cards, but there's no swiping to get in. That sounds like it could be a good system.
If somebody really wanted to get in, I'm sure they could do it, but I feel better knowing that someone is monitoring the building. They have security cameras in the office, and visitors are required to sign in at the office, so the office people are monitoring that too. If somebody got in, I'd be glad to have trained security there inside the building, even if it is only person.
I don't think the the security guards are actually police officers, but I'm sure they are trained for their jobs. They're district employees.
I see the security guard as having two functions--one to monitor what's going on inside with the kids (and I imagine that's the bigger part of the job), and the other to monitor what's going on outside.
Our elementary school doesn't have security guards, but the building is locked. To get in, you have to get buzzed in by the office people (the security cameras are located in the office). If there is a security issue, district security officers show up along with the police.
I have to agree with both your points.

Right now my dd is more interested in the bakery (which conveniently for her also sells ice cream).;)
We really love our little neighborhood, and it's so great having restaurants and shops and a library you can walk to. But you get to live in Sweden, where they have national healthcare and a heck of a lot of other stuff we don't have. ;)
Edited to add apologies for having misunderstood your post the first time. Re-reading it now, it seems pretty obvious what you meant.

A prison?-lol!! Yes, we have roving security guards in cars 24 hours driving around to all the schools in the school district. Unfortunately some parents have no problems with their kids "hanging out" and it is usually good for nothing.
