Just a note on one subpoint. At my current job, and at most of the other positions I've held, no one takes attendance.
For the hourly people, they are required to keep a timesheet, that is approved by their supervisor. So, the present a log of their attendance, after the fact. They don't clock in/out or sign in/out. No one takes attendance. Of course, a good supervisor will know when the employees are there and when they are not, when they're late and when they're on time.
Salaried positions don't have to keep a timesheet. They only keep a leave record. IOW, since they are considered professionals, they are only asked/required to present a record of when they were NOT at work; it is assumed they are there the rest of the time.
No, I don't think it's the same. The payroll clerk doesn't see a timesheet or an entire pay period's leave record for a salaried employee.
My company, very large fortune 500, does not track hours or vacation, sick, personal days for salaried employees. We're on the honor system, and still very profitable.
None of our vacation time is carried over into the next year, it is use or lose it, and sick time in unlimited.
I've managed over 100 employees under this policy and I only had one employee abuse it, and I was able to fire him for cause. It saves countless admin costs.
Okay. So your situation isn't like mine at all.
So, if you ARE there, as regularly scheduled, does the boss' secretary report that you are there? Or does she only report when you are absent?
Refresh me .. are you a salaried employee or hourly?
It could very easily affect profitability.
If an employee is expected to work 2000 hours in a year (assuming 80 hours of allowed PTO), but they cheat the "honor system" and only work 1500 hours, then there are 500 hours of work that isn't getting done, that is being paid for unexpectedly.
No payroll tracking overhead.
Most salaried employers have 3 to 7 weeks vacation and 4 personal days and unlimited sick time, so carryover is not really necessary. I am eligible for 6wk vacation and I find it very difficult to take it all and still get my job done, but I did succeed in taking all my vacation this year.
Hundreds if not thousands less than we had before this policy was implemented.
