"It may certainly be more convenient for parents, but I don't think schools are obliged allow kids to wander freely at all times."

Yes, especially when the "hanging out" is because they are waiting for a parent to pick them up as the school has no buses after the 3pm end time.

I stand corrected. Someone (pka) did say "all".

Our elementary school is similar, you either have to be buzzed in (cameras in the office at the doors) or a key card.

The security guard is there anytime the building is unlocked, which is during the day, after school, and in the evenings when there are shows.

Security guards are standard in our district. I don't know for sure about the suburban schools, but I'd be pretty surprised, in the post-Columbine era, so see a HS without a security guard.

<<So you really do NOT know if he stays or not-gotcha>>

Well, it's a matter of trust and haven proven that the trust in this case is worthy.

Okay....so the majority ride the bus and some walk and/or are driven by parents and/or carpool?

I'm curious. What do you mean by security guard?

Sorry, that is the first thing that came to mind with guards patrolling the perimeter day and night.

<<But you don't know friends of friends and their parents, right?>>

I don't know, I know a lot of parents of his classmates, it would depend on the situation.
