Oh, that is allowed at my older ds school, they attend all kinds of sporting events, use the library doing the hours that it's open outside of the school day and generally the student body at large hangs out at school.

I think we pretty much agree. I don't consider myself parenting when I'm at work, or when the kids are across the street shooting hoops (except to the extent I'm supervising them).

My dd1's school has lots of kids there after school too, but they have to be in a supervised activity. We also supervise our kids (and their friends) when they're at home.

I hate that someone has turned "parent" into a verb.

I don't know.....I don't believe that I have to be with my children to parent them nor do I think that

I don't see the issue, parenting is an action....

The fact that you say there are a million actions, makes it a verb, don't you think?

For me, it's what you do with the time, but it does take time actually spent with the kids. Like the other poster above, I still remember, 10 years after my dad's death, things he taught me--things I learned from spending time with him and seeing his values in action. I'm not discounting the other kind of parenting, the decision-making kind, but without the time put in actively parenting, I don't think it means much.

My older dd is in 7th grade, and her school is grades 6 through 12. Kids are required to be in supervised activities to be in the building after school. I doubt that's true of the regular high schools around here, but it's typical for the middle schools and the middle/high school combinations in our district.

Yeah, it's funny how all these nouns get turned into verbs. I think this is mostly semantics, but it's interesting how people see this word. I wonder if these perceptions play into how people parent (or vice versa). For example, is someone who thinks of parenting as more of a hands-on thing more likely to become a sahp?

That is certainly what I hope for.

I never said "parenting" wasn't a verb.
