I understand, and I do think it is to some extent in the eye of the beholder. FWIW, I meant it as a positive.

Yes, I get that you do, and I'm sure I'm more cautious than some parents, but honestly, I don't know any public MS kids here who are allowed to come and go from their school buildings after school for no purpose. Even PKA's 6th grader goes to afterschool care. I'm not sure why it's a stretch to imagine that some parents might not want 6th, 7th and 8th graders hanging out unsupervised in the building or that schools wouldn't want the responsibility either.

No, I do not think that you are unusually cautious. Also, I do understand why schools might not want kids just hanging at odd hours (liability would be the main issue, I imagine). I was just curious, because there is such a huge range in what parents consider ok, what they allow etc. That is why I asked.

As I remember it with dd, 7th grade was a sort of dividing line. That was the year she started going to Starbucks sometimes with a few girlfriends. They thought it was simply the coolest thing, and I was a bit scandalized.

Actually I rely on my kid behaving himself, not the teacher/staff to supervise them...that's the difference I think.

What is the double standard?
