I can't think of what decision has been based on gender, I find that to be a bit ironic since my older son's group includes a number of girls as well as boys.

Why isn't there a concern here for unsupervised kids?
PumpkinAngel
<<Yes, I get that you do, and I'm sure I'm more cautious than some parents, but honestly, I don't know any public MS kids here who are allowed to come and go from their school buildings after school for no purpose.>>
They aren't allowed to walk out the door, down to a field (say to watch a practice or game) and then back in the building?

I'm not sure why it's a stretch to imagine that some parents might not want 6th, 7th and 8th graders hanging out unsupervised in the building or that schools wouldn't want the responsibility either.
it's creepy IMO, the idea that M/S students are allowed to roam the bldg after dismissal, well behaved or not.
Creepy?

That's what I thought as well....especially since students are allowed to attend activities without parents.

I had a discussion about this with DH once. For him locking a car is a theft issue. So the car or its contents are not stolen. For me it is a safety issue. To prevent someone from getting access to me by hiding in my car.

Really? You'd trust a tween or teen boy to walk alone in an area that would not consider safe for a girl?
That just sounds stupid. I lived in Manhattan for years, and my xh, with the penis and all the weight, was mugged 3 times to my none. I was very careful to never put myself in a potentially dangerous situation, and I expect to teach the same lessons to both my sons and daughter. Very horrible things can happen to men or women, boys or girls, but spacial awareness of danger can mitigate the occurrences.
