"Accidental" Pregnancy?

Seriously, if you weren't planning on having children, you were using BC, yes? I am confused as to how a pregnancy can be a "surprise". Either you are using BC or you aren't. If you aren't using BC and you get pregnant, where is the surprise?
I had this conversation with my SIL. She "found herself pregnant" two months before her wedding and was sincerely shocked. I asked her, "Were you using BC?"
Her answer, "No. But we weren't planning on getting pregnant."
ME: "Well, if you weren't using birth control, how can you be shocked at getting pregnant?"
Her answer: "I didn't think I could get pregnant. We've never used birth control."
Um, okay. Ah, let's see, herpes, hep c, other STD's, HIV, oh never mind.
If you had an "accidental" or unplanned pregnancy, was it due to a BC failure or other factors.
Your input is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Oh Lord Jenna, don't say that! We are done having children, and I was so sure my IUD was fullproof *G*

Funny that my Mom also had an IUD failure. I have heard of a number of women that got pregnant on an IUD, but then again, we always hear when something fails, and never - when something works right.
Despite all that, I am going to defy statistics again and get that old faithful Paraguard."
That's it!! DH is going to have to get a vasectomy. This scares me to death! We're done and now I'm worried about my IUD.

I have read of rare cases where women get pregnant after having a tubal, so it CAN happen. But in general, if you are careful and use BC as it's supposed to be used, the chance of pregnancy is low. And if you want to REALLY prevent pregnancy, then use 2 methods.
BTW, pregnancies that occur after tubal ligations, or with an intact IUD would definitely qualify as a true accident.
I'm a victim of a broken condom.... which we were using because my pill prescription ran out and it takes like 6 months to get a damn gyn appointment for a refill these days.
I got pregnant with 2 children using BC. My son was conceived using BC pills religiously never late, never missed a pill. I had taken these pills for years and never had a problem. TOTAL shock.
I got pregnant with DD while DH was on a special drug for his Crohn's Disease. The dr told him that if we wanted more children he had to stop taking this medication for 2 months. The chances of conceiving while on this drug were less than .01%. Well that less than .01% is sleeping in her crib at this moment. Needless to say...After that one...While on the table having a csection...I had my tubes tied. I believe that if I didn't DH might look at me the wrong way and I would be pregnant again. LOL!!
