"Accidental" Pregnancy?

Just curious, I've heard/read about woman who say they "found themselves pregnant" or they "accidentally" got pregnant. Aside of a condomn breaking or a cervical cap slipping, what other methods of birth control were used that failed? I mean, talking to most women who've taken the pill and it failed, I'd factor the failure rate is greater than what the packing information states!

Seriously, if you weren't planning on having children, you were using BC, yes? I am confused as to how a pregnancy can be a "surprise". Either you are using BC or you aren't. If you aren't using BC and you get pregnant, where is the surprise?

I had this conversation with my SIL. She "found herself pregnant" two months before her wedding and was sincerely shocked. I asked her, "Were you using BC?"

Her answer, "No. But we weren't planning on getting pregnant."

ME: "Well, if you weren't using birth control, how can you be shocked at getting pregnant?"

Her answer: "I didn't think I could get pregnant. We've never used birth control."

Um, okay. Ah, let's see, herpes, hep c, other STD's, HIV, oh never mind.

If you had an "accidental" or unplanned pregnancy, was it due to a BC failure or other factors.

Your input is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

"I got pg with an IUD. I WAS using BC. And I WAS surprised. My doctor was so surprised that I asked her "What do I do now?" and she said she didn't know!! In 15 years of practicing she had never had someone get pg on an IUD. My accidental pregnancy is 4 years old.

Jenna "

Oh Lord Jenna, don't say that! We are done having children, and I was so sure my IUD was fullproof *G*

"I also got pregnant on an IUD, very recently. The pregnancy ended in a (very early) miscarriage, which was a relief of sorts, because I was scared out of my wits that I might have ectopic pregnancy. That was my second IUD. The first one served faithfully for 5 years. I planned to get another one the next month, but... got pregnant with my son. It was unplanned. DH does not particularly like condoms, and interrupted act is a very, very unreliable means of BC. So there.

Funny that my Mom also had an IUD failure. I have heard of a number of women that got pregnant on an IUD, but then again, we always hear when something fails, and never - when something works right.

Despite all that, I am going to defy statistics again and get that old faithful Paraguard."

That's it!! DH is going to have to get a vasectomy. This scares me to death! We're done and now I'm worried about my IUD.

If this gives you any comfort I know that IUD's have had many advances in the past couple of years ...the ones now (like Mirena) ALSO release hormones so they have a double protective effect.

Well, I've never been pregnant. I'm on the pill AND I use condoms, because I really can't get pregnant.

I have read of rare cases where women get pregnant after having a tubal, so it CAN happen. But in general, if you are careful and use BC as it's supposed to be used, the chance of pregnancy is low. And if you want to REALLY prevent pregnancy, then use 2 methods.

Yes, I know there are true bc accidents, but I think there alot of "planned accidents" too. Someone I know told me with a straight face how she got accidently pregnant, when she realized she had forgotten to take 2 bc pills, so she decided to just wait until her next period (which was 2 weeks away) was over, and then she would "start over" She didn't use any interim bc. Then she said she was so surprised when she got pregnant. I asked why, since she went 2 weeks without taking the pill, and just gave me the lame old, "well I didn't think I would get pregnant" I think maybe some women want to have a baby, but for some reason just can't admit to it, so either sub-consciencelly or conscienelly (I know I butchered the spelling on that)they engineer an accident. I've heard other wierd stories about "accidental pregnancies" that didn't sound very accidental to me.

BTW, pregnancies that occur after tubal ligations, or with an intact IUD would definitely qualify as a true accident.

People who don't use birth control on a regular basis are lying to themselves about wanting to get pregnant, or just didn't pay attention in health class!

I'm a victim of a broken condom.... which we were using because my pill prescription ran out and it takes like 6 months to get a damn gyn appointment for a refill these days.

I am one of those freak of nature people I guess...

I got pregnant with 2 children using BC. My son was conceived using BC pills religiously never late, never missed a pill. I had taken these pills for years and never had a problem. TOTAL shock.

I got pregnant with DD while DH was on a special drug for his Crohn's Disease. The dr told him that if we wanted more children he had to stop taking this medication for 2 months. The chances of conceiving while on this drug were less than .01%. Well that less than .01% is sleeping in her crib at this moment. Needless to say...After that one...While on the table having a csection...I had my tubes tied. I believe that if I didn't DH might look at me the wrong way and I would be pregnant again. LOL!!

I now have an 8 month old little girl. I love her dearly and would not trade my life with her for anything. BUT last year I found out I was pregnant with her. At the time I was engaged to her biological father. I knew it could happen, but did not really think about it. She was an unplanned pregnancy. My point is that it happens. I can't say that it is wrong because it happened to me. Most pregnancies are unplanned, you just have to adjust to the change.
