Advent Traditions?

We are now in the Christian Season of Advent.  If your family observes:

1) Do you have any favorite Advent traditions you would feel comfortable sharing here?

2) Even if you don't observe Advent, do you have any "getting ready for Christmas" traditions?  Favorite holiday shows?

3). Do you have an opinion about "The Elf on the Shelf? "

1) Do you have any favorite Advent traditions you would feel comfortable sharing here?

We don't do religious advent traditions in our house, and didn't when I was growing up.

2) Even if you don't observe Advent, do you have any "getting ready for Christmas" traditions?  Favorite holiday shows?

However, we do have a wooden Advent tree with little doors for each day of December ending with Christmas (the star on top of the tree), and each morning my kids open the corresponding door to find a little something inside (literally, because the cubbies are about 1" square), such as a "squinkie," a quarter, an eraser, etc.

Favorite holiday shows are "The Year Without a Santa Claus" and "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town," as well as Rudolph and Frosty. Oh, and what DD calls the "Kerplunk Kerplooey" show ("Twas the Night Before Christmas"). A Christmas Carol, It's a Wonderful Life...The Polar Express is great too. I love all things Christmas.

3). Do you have an opinion about "The Elf on the Shelf? "

Until this year I swore I would never do it, although I love the creative (and dirty) ones I see on Facebook! But I was unpacking the Christmas stuff this year and a lot of what I opened belonged to my mother who died last year.  There was an elf ornament that I set aside, and DD saw it and got all excited thinking the Elf was going to start visiting. I couldn't say no, so here we go. Any ideas for a 5 y/o are welcome. DS (10) just rolls his eyes, lol

I love this season. On the first Sunday in Advent, we light the first candle in the wreath (though none of us and very few sources actually agree on what each candle means--this year we're calling it the repentance candle.)

The day before I put electric candles in all the windows that are visible from the street. The perfectionists who owned this house before installed individual low-voltage outlets beneath every window just for this purpose. They're all on one circuit, operated from a switch in the kitchen. The former owners left us their candles, so all I have to do is maintain them and plug them all in. At dusk, we flip the switch that turns them on.

We also go to an afternoon performance of Handel's Messiah on the first Sunday in Advent, then go out to a nice dinner.

I am unfamiliar with the elf on the shelf but will google it as soon as I hit "post."

We usually do an Advent wreath with religious ed classes, although weren't able to this year.  My boys favorite is the Lego City Advent calendar, and even better, the Star Wars version.  I've been known to buy one of each so that there are less fights, not as big of a deal now that they are older.  We also have a wall hanging that my MIL made, not as much fun so usually my youngest does it.

2) Even if you don't observe Advent, do you have any "getting ready for Christmas" traditions?  Favorite holiday shows?

We like to cut down a Christmas tree if it works into the schedule. They like to decorate sugar cookies and help me decorate the tree.

3). Do you have an opinion about "The Elf on the Shelf? "

It would drive me batty but I like seeing how creative some people get.  CMKristy does it for her family and she is fantastic at it.  I look forward to her pictures every day.

We have an Advent wreath and we say a prayer before we light each week's candle, We also save putting up the tree for the third week, the week of joy.  I love the movie, Polar Express, also cartoons like Frosty and Rudolph.  I have no idea what elf on a shelf is.

We watch It's a Wonderful Life, The original Grinch, and A Christmas Story every year. Oh, and Elf. and I think Elf on the Shelf is one of the stupidest things to ever hit this planet.

1. Most of the Advent traditions we used to have have been abandoned s the boys have grown older. The calendar they used to read every night hadn't been used in about seven years. I used to set up the Nativity Scene and move the wise men a little closer to the manger every night until Epiphany, but I stopped doing that about five years ago. This is the first year we haven't lit the Advent Wreath. We will still make and pack cookies to deliver to the neighbors soon. We do leave the manger in the Nativity Scene empty until we get back from church on Christmas Eve. 2. We used to go to see Christmas Carol and the Nutcracker every season, but thy fell by the wayside about five years ago, too. Some us will go to the Messiah singalong next week. 3. Yes, I sure do have an opinion about Satan's little minion.

Our nativity scene goes up (or under, Lol) when we put the tree up, it goes under the tree.  I also place the dept 56/dickens village out and have added to this collection since my mother bought the first piece for us in 1992.

1.  We have an advent wreath and candles, that we light each week.  We also have a hanging Santa that counts down to Christmas.

2. We observe but the hanging of the outdoor lights and greenery always makes me feel like we are getting ready for Christmas.  I enjoy a lot of the Christmas shows but Miracle on 34th Street is my favorite.

3.  Thankful that I didn't know about it when my kids were little and greatly enjoy seeing your pictures that you find!
