Advice: The big "talk"

Okay, I need advice on when people started or will start to have the big "talk" with their kids.

My oldest is going to be 9 next week. I have some friends telling me they already had this talk with their children at this age. She just seems so young to me. She still plays house, school and dolls with her little sister. IMO, telling her about sex is going to take some innocence away from her. But, am I sheltering her too much?

She knows about periods and body hair development. She already has little breats "bumps" (as she likes to call "em).

Agghhh..I really thought I had until she was 12 to have this talk like my mother did.

What is everyone's opinion?

Only equal in tackiness if you're talking about a kid! LOL

LOL Thankfully my kid clothing concerns are more along the lines of "should I buy her the next size also, just in case she outgrows it before she's outgrown needing it" (rainboots, raincoats, snowpants, socks, underwear, tights, turtlenecks, sweat pants, etc)which reminds me, I need to see if dd's rainboots still fit or if I need to start looking for a new pair (hmmm that would be an interesting addition to the Easter egg hunt . . . rainboots for dd & our niece . . . . gotta be better than candy LOL)

As far as what she wears, well, she's definitely a kindergartener LOL She just laid out her clothes for tomorrow: a pink turtleneck, a light green sweatshirt w/ tinkerbell & pink & yellow flowers embroidered on it (I know I know, cartoon character), bluejeans with pink flowers embroidered on them, a pair of flowered socks & her snow boots. She put her tinkerbell sneakers in her bookbag (I know I know cartoon character again! but they are leather & they do fit properly).

What do LC and shoes have to do with each other?

I don't want shoes with 10 years of life in them. I'm not the most fashion conscious woman, but please shoot me if I'm still wearing the same shoes 10 years from now.

And we were primarily talking about kids shoes ... Even with my slow-growing kids, a year or so is all ANY pair of shoes would last before they're outgrown. I can do 4, $15 pair of shoes in one year ... or 1, $60 pair of shoes. Six of one, half-dozen of another. I'll do the 4 cheap pair, tyvm.

I agree; they'll have the rest of their lives to walk on the wild side if that's their choice. If a parent's not sure whether shoes have bimbo potential because it's hard to decide if they're flats, sort of flats, sort of heels, "little heels", or what have you, it's probably best to err on the side of caution.

I agree with you. DD is 11 and she isn't anywhere close to having her period start. I am assuming she is going to take after me - I was 16 when i started. We just had the "mother/daughter movie" in her class and the school nurse did allude to the fact that body composition is a great indicator of when puberty starts. DD is built like I was - extremely low body fat so I think we have a while to go before she starts.

You have every right to feel that way and it is no one else's business how you parent you daughter.

She never said there was. She said she is not comfortable with her daughter using one. That is her right and you have no business questioning her parenting.

You should live where I do - I am also 5'10" tall, DH is 6'5" tall - my kids are going to be tall - just like everyone else around here. In my little corner of the world, if you don't reach at least 5'8" you are considered a "freak". You don't get "tall" (for girls) until over 6'0".

I was "very heavily" into sports and I used pads. It is not impossible. The thin pads work just fine.
