Advice: The big "talk"

Okay, I need advice on when people started or will start to have the big "talk" with their kids.

My oldest is going to be 9 next week. I have some friends telling me they already had this talk with their children at this age. She just seems so young to me. She still plays house, school and dolls with her little sister. IMO, telling her about sex is going to take some innocence away from her. But, am I sheltering her too much?

She knows about periods and body hair development. She already has little breats "bumps" (as she likes to call "em).

Agghhh..I really thought I had until she was 12 to have this talk like my mother did.

What is everyone's opinion?

I'm not seeing why a little girl should be concerned about how her face looks. Should a little boy focus on whether his face is too pale?

That is exactly the reason I don't wear it during the week.

I fail miserably at eyeliner. My eyeliner-applying skills haven't gotten much better since I tried to wear it in 8th grade.

I love that show but I always cringe when they throw the clothes away. Sure they're bad but some of the outfits those people pick out are awful. I'd hate to end up with no clothes!

<It is not UNcommon here, but it is divided by social class and other indicators. If dd had expressed a burning desire to wear make-up at age 12, I would have worried about who her peer group was. >

No makeup = plain and boring??? Attitudes like this is why I don't believe in encouraging makeup.

I think that a lot of girls do go through wanting to experiment with makeup during middle school, regardless of parental influence. But I think that long term attitudes about makeup are greatly influenced by parental attitude. The moms at my dd school who were always completely "made up" before they set foot out of the house now have dd, who at 20, won't leave the house without a full face. I just find it sad.
