Advice: The big "talk"

Okay, I need advice on when people started or will start to have the big "talk" with their kids.

My oldest is going to be 9 next week. I have some friends telling me they already had this talk with their children at this age. She just seems so young to me. She still plays house, school and dolls with her little sister. IMO, telling her about sex is going to take some innocence away from her. But, am I sheltering her too much?

She knows about periods and body hair development. She already has little breats "bumps" (as she likes to call "em).

Agghhh..I really thought I had until she was 12 to have this talk like my mother did.

What is everyone's opinion?

Do you think that your negative attitude toward paleness, which many find to be an attractive feature, has anything to do with your mother rubbing blush on your cheeks as a 7 year old?

How could I have a negative attitude towards paleness at the age of 7?

Look, I have to live with my pasty white skin as an adult.

That may be the case with many but not all.

Why is it sad?

Some people find "pale" to be attractive?

Surely, at some point in your extensive and excellent education, the concepts of cultural differences and individual tastes were presented to you? Even as hypotheticals?

I think it's better to tell kids they look okay just the way they are than to try to get them to conform to some ideal of beauty. After all, they're only kids.

i agree....i have a friend whose like that w/makeup,though. she encourages her girls to start wearing it as early as 12. it's part of a girl/woman's hygeine in her opinion.....i expect my girls to experiment but i'm not going to encourage it. i hardly wear any, myself. and their beauty is going to be complimented no more because they're wearing makeup.

i've always considered carolyn bissette (sp) kennedy, john kennedy jr's wife, beautiful. very natural, less artificial.
