(Totally OT, not SAH/WOH related, so feel free to not respond)
I went out with 5 other women to dinner last night.

ya know, i can't even get a value meal at micky d's for $7!
there are a couple of choke and pukes i could get a cheap meal at...but it isn't recomended. *shudder*.
i can also get a side salad and soft drink for $7 - which is fine if you have the appetite of a sparrow.
and we have ATM's here that dole out $10 bills too. actually, we've had a major increase in those - those little portable ATM's that gas stations and such are buyng up and putting *everywhere*. you can't spit without hitting one. tehre are no less than five within a 1-2 block radius of my house LOL. two are drive up ATMs at the bank branches!

No. You're wrong. For two reasons 1) not everyone has the same standard. Type of restaurant, type of clientele, geographical lcoation, etc can account for different restaurants having different standards. There aren't just two. and 2) there might not even BE a standard.

Or the fall back plan could be that the server ASKS.

Wouldn't happen to me. 1) I wouldn't be so rude as to ignore the server and 2) the servers around here would ask again.

I belive that is true where you are. It definitely isn't true here. Inexpensive doesn't mean cheap you know.

I wish we did. I haven't seen one of those since college (err, 15 years ago!).
yeah, thats a nice cheap shot. thanks.
i've never had my card declined due to lack of funds. i have had my card declined because the reader was too old (both in the machine or on teh card) i have had my card declined because the info stripey thing was cracked. i have had my card declined becasue i forgot to activate the new one (or conversly, i've tried to use the old expired one by accident). i have had my card declined because the computer wasn't working properly, i have had my card declined (most recently) because the banks computer went down. i have had my card declined because i forgot the pin number. i have had my card declined (right along side with everyone elses) during peak shopping seasons becaue the credit card cmpany computers get overloaded. i have had my card declined in gas station pumps, but the card worked perfectly fine inside the station (*shrug* on that one - no one could figure out why taht time)
i have had my card hand declined by staff because the signature was no longer recognizable.
i have had all my cards frozen for a short period of time, at my request due to identity theft.
i have also had my card declined becasue i mistook my ATM card as a debit/credit card. (that was when i had seperate cards for ATM and credit though).
i suppose you've never experienced any of that though, right?
two standrads for how a check is done up, created, closed, or made.
there are only two ways to do it - either split, or whole.
athts it.
is this really a tough concept?
>>Or the fall back plan could be that the server ASKS.<<
i think you're the only poster how maintains that all servers ask all the time. obviously its not that common elsewhere.
>>Wouldn't happen to me. 1) I wouldn't be so rude as to ignore the server and 2) the servers around here would ask again.<<
i didn't ask if it *would* happen, i was asking a hypothetical question as in, what if thats what you did. but in any case, your server would just keep asking until you answered them?
that'll get you nothing but an annoyed customer here. if they didn't respond to you, you walk away or follow protocol. it means they want a server who is there but not there.
well lucky you then.
i hope it isn't embarrising for you if it ever does happen. you know, people just assuming you're irrisponsible with your funds and all that bullsh-t.
