Is this an age related thing?

(Totally OT, not SAH/WOH related, so feel free to not respond)
I went out with 5 other women to dinner last night.

I explained this already. I believe we disagreed.

No.
<>
But a restaurant doesn't get to choose what I find or don't find convenient. For me, cash is inconvenient.
<>
I have not posted time and time again about how inconvenient not having checks split is. I also have not said that I always need my checks to be split. I have said that it seems that splitting checks is not a problem for most restaurants and that requests for splitting checks is not always more inconvenient for waitstaff than paying for a bill in a different way.
<>
You are comparing a group giving the waitstaff an appropriate amount of cash to a group getting separate checks. Those are not the only alternatives. For many waiters and waitresses (as many have explained here), it isn't nearly as inconvenient as you have made it out to be.
<>
Judging is one thing. Denying people service is another. I don't care what the waitstaff says behind my back. But if they would deny my entrance to a restaurant because I asked for a separate check, I really don't think that is somewhere I want to dine.
>>But a restaurant doesn't get to choose what I find or don't find convenient. For me, cash is inconvenient.<<
actually, any business does have that right, which is why they dictate what forms of payment they'll accept. they may not decide what is convienient *for you* personally - but they certainly can and do curtail forms of payment which you may find inconvienient. such as not accpeting credit cards, or certain credit cards, not accepting personal checks, not allowing for split checks, not allowing for credit cards to be used ofr purchases under a certain amount.
>>I have not posted time and time again about how inconvenient not having checks split is.<<
hmm, i thought taht was you - but i could be confusing you with someone else.
>>You are comparing a group giving the waitstaff an appropriate amount of cash to a group getting separate checks. Those are not the only alternatives. <<
what other alternatives are there? you can either split the check - or not. you can either give one lump payment, or several payments. there isn't a heck of a lot of room tehre for alternatives.
>>For many waiters and waitresses (as many have explained here), it isn't nearly as inconvenient as you have made it out to be.<<
i said it *can* be, and i have outlined the problems/complications numerous times. i didn't make them up, i'm stating what i know from experience.

you might be surpirsed to find out how long a server's memory can be. i've done this myself - i see a party whom i remember to be trouble, and i refuse to wait on them. this isn't an uncommon thing. granted - its not typically done because the party asked for spereate checks, its more or less because they caused some sort of problem or the server felt they were "cheap" or unreasonable. but it still happens, and is allowed ot happen within reason in teh resteraunt.
>>But if they would deny my entrance to a restaurant because I asked for a separate check, I really don't think that is somewhere I want to dine.<<
to be frank, the feeling is more likely than not to be mutual. you don't want them, they don't want you. the general idea behind it (if i may for a moment) is that diners who need seperate checks or ask for prices for entrees etc are not considered to be wealthy or affluent enough to dine there on a regular basis - "novices" as they're called or once a year type patrons aren't the people who keep those resteraunts alive and profiting. and they certainly won't cater to them a second time around.
oooh you have a fuddruckers where you are!?
i like me some 'a that once in a while LOL.
that, and i miss shoneys, and papa johns pizza.
mmmm, shoneys has THE best sweet tea ever. and papa johns has that garlic dipping sauce (i know it fast food pizza and all, but its *good*! yum)

Do you know of any restaurants that refuse to accept debit and/or credit cards for groups of over a certain number?
<>
So you believe it is unreasonable for a large group to ever pay in anything but one lump payment?

So really, it isn't about separate checks at all as you claimed, but rather the overall attitude of the customer? I generally tip very generously when I have made any additional requests, whether asking for a substitution, sauce on the side, separate checks, or anytime I am out with a large group.
<>
But this is an extremely small percentage of restaurants nationwide that cater to this clientele. I understand that wealthy people generally discuss money as little as possible.

>> i find that using the notion of splitting ones check as a measure of good service to be unreasonable.<<
I don't think anyone said it was the only measure. But if I were at a restaurant and they didn't want to split a check just because it's too time consuming, I'd feel the same as if they felt it was too time consuming to get me a napkin if I asked for one.
ETA: If it were restaurant policy, I wouldn't "take it out" on the server, but I would feel it reflects badly on the management.
And... I can't imagine why someone would "enjoy" eating somewhere where all the employees were judging and being rude to people they deem "not good enough", but to each their own I guess.
