(Totally OT, not SAH/WOH related, so feel free to not respond)
I went out with 5 other women to dinner last night.

Huh? i dont get the point. In a world of plastic you can use one credit card and give and have the ppl you are dinning with the cash pay them back later. . A waitress is not you personal assistant or you banker. I cannot imagine focusing on a transaction in the business, you focus on the concept the food and the atmosphere, taking care of your tables needs. When you are sitting there waiting for you check or for service perhaps think about the idea a waitress may be seperating eight checks for another party b/c they think it is the waitress job!
Do you recall the day's when a waitress actually did not cash out you checks you had to go to a cashier, to cash out your bill. Many fast foo places are lke this and their is not SERVICE!
Seperate checks were a bit more customary then.
When we go out to high end places, it is fun to hang out with the arrogant and snotty customers, they crack me up and i have learned alot about how i dont want to be, i have also made some tight frienships. After we dine with the snotty and arrogant who expect everything for nothing we go finsih up the nite with the fantastic staff. :) I will at times even smoke a cigar. :) Iam talking about EXTREMLY WEALTHY ppl, beyond a wealth i will ever know.
IMO to expect seperate checks during a wait and rush is arrogant and snotty, if you cannot accept that no seperate checks are not a given during rush then most busy places, dont need the business. There is no reason to deal with arrogant and snotty customers who cannot accept no for a answer.
It is like telling a customer we are 86ed on a item, make another choice.
sorry, i didn't get the joke at first - its a common thing to hear people talk about waiters and waitresses as if their muck on the bottom of a person's shoe - and are treated accordingly by said people. so the defenses go up pretty quickly.
i've actually had customers say things like that to me or berate me in that fashion for doing something so unreasonable as not giving them a specific number of ice cubes in their drinks. (true story, BTW - it was the only customer i've ever had that made me cry - ever).
you obviously don't get what i'm saying - because i've not once said that they will give you poor service, or actually act like a what did you say? "prick"? to you.
i said it wouldn't be likely that they would take your reservation again. so you wouldn't have to worry about dining there, ever again.
and i've mentioned what COL area i live exactly, what...3 times? because someone asked me? please.

What if you won't see them again? Or dont see them often? Or they're untrustworthy?

Are you assuming one would be impatient if they had to wait a few minutes for their check to be cashed out? I sure don't. I realize that it takes time and that wait staff are busy and that I"m not their only customer. I'll wait. Shoot, often I sit around for a time after my check is cashed out.

Actually, quite a number of my favorite local places are like this. Doesn't bother me a bit.
no kidding, huh? here are some good stories for ya:
i had a guy try and beat the door in one night (because HIS watch said it was 5 of, while our clock said it was ten after). i had to call the police, and get an escorthome.
i've also had a customer (in a pizza joint) throw a bowl of piping hot spaghetti at me. and i wasn't even a server. i was the manager LOL. i still don't know why he threw it. somthing about garlic bread...
i watched a customer throw a bucket of live lobsters at the owner of a resteraunt. he was apperently very angry because he originally threw the cooked lobster at the waitress insisting it had been frozen, and when he realized he was wrong he threw the live lobsters too.
i finally came to realize that when you combine food and money, people lose their minds.
B/c if you are in a group of ppl at one table, you are eating together, not seperate. It is really not up to the waitress to split your tab. If you are at a counter the bar or a communtiy table, we have a bar and communtity table, you may have seperate checks. Dont take up tables that ppl would like to dine at togehter and waste the wait staffs times go to what accomidates your money needs.
I see that dinning in Quebec is much different than dinning in the usa. I respect that.
