(Totally OT, not SAH/WOH related, so feel free to not respond)

I went out with 5 other women to dinner last night.

its all good ;)

thinking about this thread some more - i think the main problem occurs when you have folks behaving one way, in a place where other behavour is appropriate - and they get judged.

for example - a person ordering a grey goose martini while wiping the bar stool down with a hanky.....but they're at the local pub where nighgtly brawls are totally expected and there are peanut shells on teh floor. they'd probably get beaten up.

or, the person ordering shots and red wine spritzers in a beer mug with a straw in afive star resteraunt where the waiters wear tuxes. their not likely to be invited back.

i think its more a matter of behaving in a manner that reflects the atmosphere you're in.

>>Without class to order something a restaurant *offers*? Now that is a new one on me. Why would this place have it available if they don't like these types of patrons?<<

most five star resteraunts i know don't actually carry white zin, FTR but they do have things taht can be made into drinks etc taht are considered to be without class - for example, wine spritzers. they are not offered on the drink menu - but the bar has wine, and seltzer...which makes a wine spritzer. or shots - the bar has liquor - which can be used to make shots, or top shelf martini's and other mixed drinks.

see what i mean?

I had to read your post from the first sentence!
No its not just LA. I've dined in some of the top places in NY, Boston, Chicago...and all over the world actually....Some employ people with attitude. Many many don't. Or at least not that you'd notice:)

i have to disagree with you.

doing shots at the dinner table is not classy. its not because of the type of liquor, but the actual drinking of the shot, and the purpose a shot serves. a shot is drank in the manner it is to avoid teh taste, but get all teh after effects. how many people do you know drink shots for any reason other than getting drunk? and getting drunk is not classy.

not too mention the action of drinking a shot is akin to stuffing food in your face with your fingers rather than taking a reasonable mouthful with a fork. ever see someone do a carbomb? they dribble and drool on themselves. as do many people doing regular shots of alcohol.

sorry, but doing shots are great fun - in your local pub while watching a live band or sports game - not at a resteraunt or dinner table.

I am not understanding what the issue is with White Zin.

Very true, Im curious why you consider not allowing a customer to split checks during a lengthy wait for big parties is a unreasonable request.
Could you imagine if all the big parties expect seperate checks on a lengthy wait?

OPn sunday brunch we offer seperate checks, every day is different.
Do you seriously think telling a large group no, for seperate checks is unreasonable? if so why?

its not a wine lover's wine, tahts for sure. wines have a pecking order, white zin just happens to be on the bottom. these are some of my thoughts on why:

i'm not sure how to explain it. white zin is typically disliked and/or looked down upon by wine lovers. its considered a beginers wine, or perhaps a wine for people who don't really like wine....its a bit too....wine cooler-ish. or perhaps for people who want to look classy for drinking wine, but don't actually want to drink wine.

for wine lovers, wine is their drink of choice, but for many people wine symbolizes a certain romanic feel, a certain amount of class or panache but if you don't like wine, or aren't familiar with wine at all they'll choose white zin as a safe bet. its not strong at all, and it palatable for people who don't really like wine. its kind of like the wine that a person might choose to feel like they're "all grown up" at the dinner table, when they'd do much better sipping on a sweet mixed drink instead.

i think to a lot of people (not just servers BTW) it says you're out of your league a bit.

the same could be said for watering down a glass of (any) wine.

honestly, in any resteraunt i've wokred in, fine dining or othrwise i've only seen two brands of white zin served, (if any) or carried by the resteraunt. and typically in small quantities.
