(Totally OT, not SAH/WOH related, so feel free to not respond)
I went out with 5 other women to dinner last night.

Wrong. A cashier in a grocery store may also bag groceries, carry out groceries, stock shelves, do inventory, be a manager. Cashiering may NOT be the focus of your job.
A movie theatre worker also makes popcorn, runs projectors, pleases customers, cleans theatres, etc. Cashiering is not necessarily the sole focus of their job.
In a retail store, I'd wager a big bundle that 'cashier' is not only not their title, but not the primary focus of their job. Sales would be.
I believe your debate style could most aptly be described as "argument from authority."
See we may have very different experence b/c of the places we live?
When you work at a grocery store as a cashier you are paid to be a cashier, you only work as a cashier unless they give you a different title, if you are a stocker, you are paid to be a stocker you may not be a cashier unless you are trained as such and then you are paid a cashier wage. Baggers are paid to only bag, bakery is bakery so on and and so forth. Cashiers do not take out grociers that is what baggers do. They have to stay at their register. The managers, or shift supervisiors are the only ones who actually can preform all dutues througout the day, nite.
As for retail and sales, your right, i was thinking of places like wal-mart, target, stein mart, ect.
