Anyone switch from soft to hard (RGP) contact lenses?

I've worn soft lenses for 30+ years. The last two years, I've been wearing multi-focals, which correct for both reading and distance vision. However, they don't give great vision, so now the eye doc is recommending that I switch to Wave contact lenses, which use a topographical map of the cornea to custom-design the lenses for your eye. They're supposed to give much clearer vision for both reading and distance, and will cost slightly less than the disposable soft lenses I now buy.
But, and this is a big but for me, hard lenses take some getting used to, so you can't wear them for very long at first. I hate the feeling of anything in my eye, so this is the part that scares me. Once I take the plunge, I have to pay for these things, and I'd hate to spend $500 on lenses that I'm stuck with for a year.
Has anyone switched to hard lenses after wearing soft for a long time, and more specifically, anyone have Wave lenses? There are a few reviews out there, but I'd like to hear more.
