With all these talk about going from homes to apartments, I wondered how many people think:

1. Going from a home to an apartment is moving "down" in life. (I am not speaking of after the kids grow up and you sell your home to OWN an apartment/condo/townhouse, but a family that owns a home and then sells it to rent an apt.)

2. What are the advantages when you own something and have equity and then go to giving someone else your money to pay THEIR bills?

3. How bad would it have to be living in your home to make the decision to do this?

4. What advantages and/or disadvantages are there to living in an apartment vs living in

And to have just a 2-hour block of relaxing, nearly-uninterrupted time at someone's house.

I thought we were talking about bday parties.

I have...and as I said, it's often come under $100....why should I seek to have a more expensive birthday party when I can throw the type of party the my child wants for less money?

If I were still willing to have babies, I'd want to have yours. :) (I wouldn't have to tail them at all their birthday parties, would I? ;)

Our rental house is an investment. This year, I broke even on it b/c of all the damage from the prior renter and I was lucky to break even and not take a loss for the year. We don't rent the house for a huge profit, we do it for the investment aspect. The house has more than doubled in value in the 10 years that we've owned it and since we have an unconventional mortgage, it is in our best interest to keep the property and let it continue to appreciate. We reevaluate every year though to ensure that it is still a smart investment vehicle.

I'm confused, isn't your child playing with the other children at the birthday party?

My favorite teacher in high school rented an apartment and as far as I know, she's still renting that same apartment, 14 years later. She'd been there for at least a decade prior. She had no desire to own a home and deal w/the responsibilities that came w/home ownership. So she rented. She's a Ph.D, so it's not like she's an idiot, either. She just didn't want to deal w/a house.
