With all these talk about going from homes to apartments, I wondered how many people think:

1. Going from a home to an apartment is moving "down" in life. (I am not speaking of after the kids grow up and you sell your home to OWN an apartment/condo/townhouse, but a family that owns a home and then sells it to rent an apt.)

2. What are the advantages when you own something and have equity and then go to giving someone else your money to pay THEIR bills?

3. How bad would it have to be living in your home to make the decision to do this?

4. What advantages and/or disadvantages are there to living in an apartment vs living in

But as any investment advisor worth their salt will tell you, diversification is the key to building wealth. And it is true that for most people, their home is their largest investment, but that doesn't mean it is a smart investment. Personally, our home is an asset, but it isn't our largest asset. Not by a long shot.

It is far better to have a less expensive home and diversified investments than to have all your assets tied up in your home and no real assets anywhere else (a couple of grand in the bank so doesn't count). Surely the recent housing market crash has demonstrated that...you know, never put all your eggs in one basket!

My idea of the American Dream is to be completely financially independent by the time DH is 40. YMMV.

My dear friend who grew up in Communist Poland is just happy that she doesn't have to stand in line for 4 hours to buy bread and that her daughters get more than one pair of shoes a year here. Seriously.

So really, the American Dream means something different to everyone. Maybe home ownership is the holy grail to you, but to my dear friend, simple capitalism is enough for her.

Ah huh, that's why other experiences are weird, odd and what other lovely, lovely things have you stated about other people's experiences?

My sister's best friend is currently renting. Her DH is a CFO for a national corporation based in our area. They are renting b/c they haven't sold their previous house yet (b/c of the horrific housing market). Given their rather large income and large net worth, they're hardly transients or undesirables. But renting is the financially smart thing to do right now.

Since they didn't stay, that pretty much contradicts what you have said over and over.

So then why are you questioning the fact that drop off and pickup times are sometimes on invites if you did it yourself?
