I don't think either of you is a bad parent, and I have no idea why they wouldn't attend events when their child is invited to come along. BUT, I just did want to say in their defense that I would not leave my one year old with a babysitter I didn't personally know - and talking on the phone to someone would not cut it for me.
I don't think either of your is right or wrong in your approaches to entertaining/parenting/babysitting.
We have five kids, but I am in a relatively unique position.
