We are long past the kiddo b-day parties (yeah!), but we used to do it at home, pretty low-key. When dd got into the 10yo range, we would usually just take a small group of her good friends to either a movie and pizza or to an amusement park.

We've done a variety of things throughout the years.
For dd13's party we told her she could invite four friends, two from church, and two from school.
So so true about people showing up who did not rsvp...happens a lot and sometimes they bring their siblings with.
We don't have any "normal" or "standard".
