Target is facing some backlash about their decision to open up on Thanksgiving night in order to compete with other big box stores:

i have a friend who works at kohls, she said they're opening at midnight or 1:00 in the morning too, that is way too early IMO but if one store is doing it they all do it, don't they?

I bet an extra shift of holiday pay would be meaningful to a lot of the seasonal retail employees.

Petitions won't stop anything so long as there are loads of people lined up with pockets full of cash and wallets full of credit cards.

Doctors, nurses, police officers, firefighters, convenience store clerks, gas station attendants, and all sorts of other people work on holidays. I don't know why Target employees would be any more deserving of a day off.

I was on that change.org list and have signed my fair share of petitions but I didn't sign that one.

"Doctors, nurses, police officers, firefighters, convenience store clerks, gas station attendants, target retail workers"

Which one one of these is not like the other?

Okay then, let's see ... farmers, ranchers, janitors, hotel clerks, car rental agents, flight attendants, pilots, waiters and waitresses, cooks, tow truck drivers, customer service agents, bus drivers, taxi drivers ...

The point is that Target employees aren't any more deserving of the day off than anyone else. Target is planning to stay open because it will make them a lot of money, which in turn secures the job for those employees. I don't see how the employees are really helped - in the long run - by the store being closed.

Really? Target employees are different from convenient store workers and gas station attendants ... Um, how again?

I hope it's all a bust and that shoppers stay home, but I can't see having to go into work the night of a holiday as a grave injustice.

Ditto. I don't see why retail workers should have to give up their holiday so people can start bargain hunting 12 hours sooner.
