Target is facing some backlash about their decision to open up on Thanksgiving night in order to compete with other big box stores:

Office jobs are becoming more and more awful too. Companies keep downsizing. The workers who are eligible for overtime are mostly okay, but the salaried ones keep getting more and more work piled on top of them. And there's really nothing they can do, because if they complain? Guess who's fired in the next round of lay-offs?

It's a good point about other stores being open on Thanksgiving and not doing well.

This.

The whole goal of retail is to *make money*. So it would be decidedly stupid of them to ignore the opportunity of great profits on Black Friday. And then where would those employees be? Oh yeah, back in the unemployment line.

I did - for several years. My dad did. My parents did.

My dad owned his own retail business, and he wouldn't have dreamed of being open on Christmas or Thanksgiving. There are lots of businesses around here that are closed for the holidays. I can't see any reason why Black Friday is going to bring in more money by beginning at 11 p.m. on Thursday than it would at 5 a.m.. on Friday.

Thanksgiving isn't Black Friday though; it's Thanksgiving. Where do you draw the line? If earlier is better, why don't they have Black Wednesday instead? Or maybe it should be Black Halloween.

sounds kind of cool if people knew they could reach someone on christmas day to plan travel. nowadays, we just type in expedia or travelocity dot com.
