OK, I've finally got Money, DH and I have agreed to put everything EVERYTHING on my one credit card so we can download and categorize it (previously a lot of our $$ is spent as cash since our renter pays us in cash).

Personally, I put $125.00 a month in the piss away money. It pays for any take out food, movies, rental playstation games and babysitting. I may have start budgeting more, though because I am always going over.

We don't really call it "crap money" but my DH & I both have a set amount of "free money" allocated to us each month. We can do WHATEVER we want with it (mine usually goes towards Starbucks, lunches, makeup/hair products and manicures).

I'd highly recommend building something like this into your budget - this way you don't squabble over purchases that one of you deems unimportant. So if you DH wants his 7-11, he can have it out of his "free money."

I won't tell you our exact amount, but it's usually about 3-5% of our total monthly budget.

Well, we don't even really "budget" in the traditional sense of the word. But I'd say I generally spend about $30-$50 week in cash and that usually consists of convenience store items, the occasional starbucks and take-out food, and anything else that can't be charged. DH probably spends a bit more cos he tends to buy lunch/sodas and I either bring mine or eat at home on my days off.

I like to charge everything else (including gas and groceries) cos you can really see where your $$ is going.

We have these sort of expenses in our budget - it really helps to be very realistic about it. I know $5 per week would hardly fly here, and we would be very tempted to run right to the 7-11 ATM and pull out more cash. My dh calls this his 'gas money.' Meaning, he'll stop at the gas station every morning to pick up 3-4 bottles of lipton iced tea on the way to work ;)

I also have a sum of cash from the budget each week. It's a lot more than $5, but I also use it for small entertainment expenses, like movie rentals and things.

I've got to ask, where do you buy groceries online? Is it a local thing?

Instead of "arbitrarily" picking a budget figure, track those "piss" expenses for a month. Get a real solid of idea of what you are actually currently spending. Then, if it's more than you thought, or more than you want to spend, pare it down to a reasonable amount.

If you start at $40, when you're actually currently spending bout $100, you're doomed to failure. But if you know you're currently spending $100, and want to reduce it, make it $75. Then when that has sunk in and you're only spending $75, cut it to 60, etc.

Personally, I think your $40 is low.

Choose your friends by their character and your socks by their color.  Choosing your socks by their character makes no sense and choosing your friends by their color is unthinkable.

You know, DH and I don't have a "budget" per se. I spend what I need to and he lets me know when it's out of hand.

I'm cheap by nature though, so I always like finding a deal.

I do have this diet coke addiction tho...

Is that like peapod? And do you know if it is only available in the city? We're out on the island.
