Cell Phones on Planes?

When I recently flew to see my parents, United was still limiting electronic device usage on the flight out, but relaxed the rules by the time I flew home.  It was very nice to be able to continue to use my iPad during takeoff and landing, you still had to keep Wi-Fi turned off.  There has been some discussion on airlines allowing the use of cell phones as well, such as making and receiving calls, and there isn't much support for it:

Mere weeks after the FAA relaxed rules to allow the use of personal electronic devices during all phases of flight -- a running list of which airlines are allowing gate-to-gate use is here -- the FCC is getting in on the cellphone plane party and considering letting passengers talk and text across the whole country.

"...the time is right to review our outdated and restrictive rules," said FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler.

The public reaction was swift and overwhelmingly negative. Some passengers said they would consider changing their airline loyalty if their go-to carrier decided to allow in-flight calls.

I think it's like the silent cars on commuter trains, nobody wants to hear your conversation.  On the other hand, could totally see it being used for business when you are flying in the middle of the workday.

Are you for or against it?

Flying is its own special hell anyway. Really, there is nothing anyone can do to make it worse than it already is. Why not add cell phones to the mix? Of course, flight attendants will need to pack extra duct tape to quell the air rage that is sure to ensue when some obnoxious deal broker has to talk to a colleague in Singapore at 3 a.m. on an international flight while everyone else is trying to sleep.

I agree, except that if it is an emergency I would be fine with it. But the whole "Hey! I'm flying over your house! Ha ha ha!" would annoy me. Of course, my seat mate having a conversation on his/her cell would tell me a lot about their personality, so I'd know what I'd be in for should I strike up a conversation. ;)
