People that wake up everyday to sunshine regardless of the actual weather, whose lives look peachy perfect b/c of their demeanor, whose energies and smiles motivate you or make you want to strangle them...

Or do you?

Often the reason people can spend "just because" on things that mean a lot to them are because they are "frugal" in other areas of their lives. As PKA has said numerous times, it's about balance.

Our house was built around 1900 but we were lucky it was mechanically updated before we moved in, The previous owner took great care of it.

Then it's all good savcal, Morty has said she believes in balance, others don't seem to be consistent about that.

I think you have that backwards.

any kind of either delayed gratification or profession of not wanting the latest and greatest in the first place seems to annoy you.  That is the way you come across to readers.

Nope you have that all wrong. I am not speaking of delayed gratification at all. There are some things that you just can not delay as you won't be able to do them.

In your posts to bord, you have said numerous times that living a modest life and then spending more in retirement is not what you want to do, otherwise all of your posts to bord would be totally silly.  You even said...

<< I am glad that  I am not waiting another 30 years to do things And might not be in 100% shape to do them, like you dh whom you have said cant drive at night as he is legally blind, correct? You never know what will happen in life and I personally do not see the need to live so tightly for so many years. >>

But given that you can't exen define those "things", I'm not surprised your back tracking.  Again.

No, I did not say that. I said I need to have a balance. I have no clue what the future will bring. I might not be able to do things physically and mentally by the time I am 70 years old. I am doing things now WHILE I am also saving money for the future. According to what I just heard recently on how much the average american has for retirement, I am doing pretty good AND I am able to do things now.

Delayed gratification means putting needs before wants, even if the want seems more immediate than the need. When you are twenty it seems like you have "plenty of time" to save for a house or retirement or whatever, and you "need" a car, a cool phone, money to go out with friends, and trendy clothes." Delayed gratification at that age might mean putting aside some money for savings rather than going to Starbucks every morning or joining an expensive gym. At a later age, it might mean buying secondhand rather than new, waiting to buy something until you have the $$$ rather than using credit, or waiting until the movie comes out on Netflix rather than going to the theatre every time so you can build up savings, going to Disney every three years instead of every year. Things like that.

Why can't you do both? We are able to do things AND have retirement savings and emergency savings.

Yea, I get that you both spend - and - save and there's nothing wrong with that. What amuses me are the people that talk from both sides of their mouth, How frugal and modest they claim their lives are then how how much they spend just because, Of course it does depend on what thread we're in but at least you're consistent morty! ;-)

I have always said the same thing about balance. You can't save everything or spend everything. It just does not work. Just like dieting. You can't deny yourself everything or it will just not work. Everything in moderation.

Not all the time. They might just make a good salary and can do both.

Ideally and IMO disney happens at the ages my kids were, they were 10, 11 or 12 and DS was 6 I think.  They were at perfect ages and I'm glad we can say we did disney.  I had never been there and my parents won a trip to epcot at a dinner party once.  While I can't say I missed anything (I don't believe you miss what you've never experienced) I am glad we took our kids there when we did.  Delaying that probably wouldn't have meant the same thing...  They probably would have lost interest too..

Yeah ours was taken care of (we actually have it checked up every year and I know how my parents took care of it) but it was just old and needed to be replaced and we never had a hot water heater so we got that too.

Of course not all the time. Which is why I didn't say all the time.  I used the word "often". Do you know what that means? It doesn't mean "all the time."

My kids STILL want to go and they are 10 and 15 lol. My dd was there when she was 1 1/2, 3, 11 and 13. My ds was there when he was 6 and 8. The ages were all great. My mom loves it there too and has been there so many times. We convinced her to do something different this time though Laughing

So turn the words on me instead of facing the fact that many people make enough money to do both.

"Why can't you do both? We are able to do things AND have retirement savings and emergency savings." Good for you. We did "things" too. It's not like we came home every night after work and ate our crusts of bread and sat in the dark and cold until we reached a certain level of financial security. We just do more things now, because we have less of a need to save.

Ooooh, I'm scared ... of facing the fact that some people have a lot of money!  Oh man, how I denied myself that knowledge for so many years!

The kids, DH and I made brownie sundaes for dessert.  We should have settled for sliced apples, oh the shame!  Lol.  But I agree, diets don't work.

So now you were NOT frugal for many years? Which one is it?  and I never said you came home after work and ate crusts of bread and sat in the dark and cold so why even say that?
